New EII owner needs help.

2008-10-27 by George

Hi Guys,

I'm a proud new owner of the mighty EII, after finally fulfilling my
youth dream of owning this machine (being a Ferris Bueller and
Depeche Mode fan for all those years) ;) I just got it on Ebay for
$700 and am a little bummed out. According to the seller it was in
perfectworking condition when it shipped, but I found 2 problems
with it (so far). It sounds to me that one or more voices are out.
When playing it, voices out out. I'm not sure if I tested it
correctly, but it seems that voice #8 cuts out most of the time. But
sometimes it will happen on the third or fourth also randomly.
I tested it by playing the same note eight times in a row... Is that
the correct way to test it? I also found out in this forum that the
S3528 chip could be responsible for this.

Are these chips still available somewhere? Could the so
often mentioned "chip resetting/cleaning-procedure" resolve this
problem? I opened it up for the first time yesterday and was truly
shocked how many IC's are on the boards. I'm a little afraid to mess
with them as everything seems so fragile and a little brittle due to
age. How do I remove the IC's anyway without causing any damage? I
realize that I need to be grounded, but what do I use to lift them
out of the sockets?

Another problem is the keyboard. Some keys require to be attacked
twice or three times with harder velocity in order to play. What
could be wrong with it. Do you think a cleaning of the contact board
could solve this? If so, how do I go about this? Could another chip
problem be causing this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

George
