First, did you install and are you using the version of Stuffit
Expander found in the group files section? 

Second, please verify you are dragging and then dropping your .sit
file on the Stuffit Expander desktop *alias* (not on a file).

Yes, you need 7.1 for PC exchange. You may be able to use "Apple File
Exchange" (if you have it) to accomplish the same task under 7.0.1.

As far as updating to OS 7.1 or higher, if your system meets the
requirements of the new OS version, you -should- be able to upgrade
without losing anything. However as with anything computer related; if
you have things you cannot afford to lose, you really need to back
them up before making major changes such as an OS upgrade.
