MD Pattern Offset and Length

MD Pattern Offset and Length

2004-07-12 by nathan jantz

Currently in Song mode you can set the offset and length (start and end
points) of a given pattern in the MD. This can be incredibly powerful for
making variations and fills in your patterns. I'm interested in taking this
a step further and be able to control these settings on-the-fly in Pattern
mode which would make for some crazy real-time control. Does anyone here
have any ideas on how this could be achieved perhaps through midi change
control, sysex or something like that? I looked at the midi implementation
chart but nothing there seems to indicate the pattern offset and length can
be controlled externally unless I overlooked something. Obviously the scale
settings can be manipulated while in pattern mode but that only addresses
the pattern length and not the offset which would be critical to obtain the
effect.

Ultimately, I would love to see a new feature as part of the family of the
new CTR machines where these real-time pattern settings could be achieved.
This would would lead way to doing parameter locks and applying LFO's to
these settings to get some crazy drill-and-bass style action!

thoughts anyone?

it's not the same, but you can do some cool stuff with the new
trig/gate settings
in the global menu (under the map editor).

Have you experimented with this much? If so, can you give an
example of the type of things you can do with these new trig/gate
settings?

I experimented with it very briefly. but IIRC, you basically have
note-on triggering
the pattern and note-off stopping it. so it's a cool way to restart
your patterns
or stop/start them. I seem to remember there being something else to
it that was
fun, but I can't recall exactly what. you'll have to try it yourself
:-)
