clear pattern conformation

clear pattern conformation

2004-03-08 by starpawz612

hi

last night i made a pattern and was then playing around with it ...
and accidently cleared it (start/stopping, then i went to switch
muteing modes or something, whoops).

i realize that ease and speed of use is an important aspect of
elektron gear, and it's pretty easy to nuke data on just about all
gear i've used ... but would a conformation before something
dangerous like a clear pattern be a bad thing? i saw the clear
pattern screen come up and shat myself with tears before it
disapeared .. . .

i like that you're always working directly with pattern data, i'm
very familiar with that from using LSDj ...

mmm, that's it, really ... obviously still getting used to the
machine, still <3 <3 <3 it

I think I've only done that once in the MD; but then I've been very
careful not to do it again :-) It totally sucks when it happens, though.

I've always thought that a "cut" implementation is better than "clear."
In other words, "cut" data can then be revived with "paste" rather
than going to bit heaven like it does now. Or, clearing should have
an "are you sure?" type of pop-up window before it clears anything.

Anyway, the best thing with the MnM is to get used to using the "super"
menu for copying/pasting/clearing. That way, it gives you an extra second
to verify that you've pressed the right button.

Did you know that if you just pressed repeated the 'clear pattern'
key strokes, it serves as an undo?

On the other hand, even knowing this I have accidentally deleted
components of my patterns just from working too quickly. So I would
like some kind of global setting, where you would get a warning when
you attempted to clear something.

I have also deleted many patterns and thought it was a real problem
especially if you are using the MnM for live improvisations. I just read
that you can 'undo kit' from the kit menu to restore the latest settings.
Could this also restore patterns if you saved it once or is there no way to
resurrect a pattern unless you undo 'clear pattern' by pressing it again.
When i have cleared patterns I did not even know I had done it before it was
already long gone. A second 'undo' would be great.

unless you saved the pattern in another location, that one immediate undo is
all you get.

The more I think about it, the more I'd like to have a more traditional save
feature, so you can work everywhere within a pattern, then you need to save
it or its gone. I think I'd lose less work that way. Either that, or the
ability to generate a warning when you try to clear something.

Re: [elektron] Re: clear pattern conformation

I like how it works just fine. I'd forget to save all the time with
the MD... the roland drum machines (606,707,727,808,909, etc) all work
as the Machinedrum does, and my experience with touching the current
program directly would have me assuming my pattern is saved.

Another item, perhaps more important, is how much of a hassle this
would be for live use. I often make quick changes to the tail of a
pattern right before jumping to another, expecting the changes will be
there when I get back to the pattern. An extra couple button presses
to save would make it impossible to do alter patterns on the fly and
expect them to be as they were. Esp if you work at high bpm...

sounds reasonable - so what would be wrong, then, with a user defineable
option to be warned when about to erase something?

[elektron] Re: clear pattern conformation

2004-03-09 by starpawz612

like i said, i really like working directly with pattern data, that's
fine. i _didn't_ know about undo, after i did the mistake i glanced
through the manual _thinking_ i saw something like that but seeing
only a kit undo option. i'm going to have to try out this undo
pattern feature for future use!

now this idea of cutting rather than clearing, that's the best! this
is the way it works in LSDj, there's no clear, just cut, so when you
get rid of something it's always right there for you until you cut
more.

i think user definable features are pretty much a pain in the ass and
should be reserved for cases when no other solution is possible ... i
really wish i just had known about undo ~sigh~

electrodavid i checked your track out, pretty fun + funky, yeah ...
those levels need a lot of work!

alright, bye awl!
