FW: sick sidstation

FW: sick sidstation

2001-07-25 by Jason Vernon Starnes

Hey everybody. Thanks for the updates about the MD: keep 'em coming. As I
impatiently await mine (it just got thru New York, but I'm on the West
coast), I've been sessioning my Sidstation, basking in the classic sound and
thoughtful design of the box. Right in the middle of tweaking the other
nite though, the sound sputtered out. Now all I get is noise, synced to
anything flashing on the screen, and making a nice zippery noise when I turn
a knob.
I've reset and reloaded patches, but nothing seems to work.
I was running sound thru the filter at the time, and I've heard stories of
people frying their chips with excessive volume, but this was simply a loop
through a delay, then into the sid. Anyone out there know what the symptoms
are of having overloaded the input? I seem to have heard these noises
before during a previous crash, but I'm not sure. Would reloading the OS be
the next step? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for all the contributions to this great list.
cheers,
Jason

this happened to me...

I would try that, but there's a good chance your 6581 is toast. I ended
up having to swap mine out.

the sidstation doesn't appear to have any sort of transorbs or other
static protection devices on the inputs (or outputs) and thus is pretty
sensitive to static and line overloads.

whee! Welcome to Noahz Magazine!

Item:
So, now it seems the new MD OS upgrade will enable LFO's to mod each other!
I knew it! fuckin A! Also, thanks for the input audio gate! We all know
what that's for :) :) :)

Editorial:
It would be kewl if the MD were the first instrument that has
an accurate tap tempo...you know...that averages over about 16 taps...

asr-x: horrific tap tempo, supposedly computed by 3 taps average, but
	veers incredibly

sp-808: e.g. 119.7 120.3 118.5 121.4 118.5 which one is it? duh...the
computer should average it for you!!!

st-224: e.g. 118 124 117 120, only seems to use TWO taps! Gah!

And I swear, if you meet me in person, I don't have very shaky hands!

Reverse-Engineering News:
I have measured the pitches of the TRX->BD machine at regular
intervals along the throw of the PTCH knob. I have generated a
formula and a chart which gives PTCH settings for two octaves
worth of notes. This is only for people who want to ABuse their
Machine Drum as a melodic synthesizer!!!!!

Noah wonders: is it possible to trigger the Sync24 input of my MC-202 with
my Machine Drum?

Whoa. I started work on this last night, but was
distracted by my cats fighting, and never got back to
it. You're now my new favorite person in the whole
world! :)
