New Guy: Should I buy a sfx-6 or sfx-60

New Guy: Should I buy a sfx-6 or sfx-60

2006-03-11 by rivotk2003

Hi, ive been reading from this group for a while, and after finally
playing with a monomachine in person im ready to buy one.
I want to slowly build up a nice modest setup with the monomachine
being my center piece. I plan on using a laptop to run either Live or
Reason, and then later on down to the road add either a Creamware ASB
minimax or pro-12. I do have a midi controller, but im wondering would
it be worth the extra cash to just get the keyboard version of the mnm?
Or should I just stick to the keystation I have now? It does have more
keys to it, but having the keys attached sounds nice as well.

What do you all think? I mean for the extra money I could buy a nutty
effect pedal or likewise, or is the attached keyboard really worth it?

Thanks

I don't think it's worth it, but that's me
i like the compactness of sfx60

if you're getting your rig started
  and you already have keys...

use the extra cash to get something thats going
to add more to your music making

hello...
yes i am thinking of getting a monomachine to company my machinedrum and the others, and the desktop version is better for me cause when gigging it will be a big trouble carrying the keyboard version. But if you are going to use it as a studio instrument only, get the keyboard version. The leds light up when the keys are pressed and got that lovely joystick aswell. And it looks kick ass.

actually, having owned both...I primarily used
the tabletop one in the studio and the keyboard
version live. it's just SO great for immediate
work. you can write patterns on the fly much
quicker and you've got more feedback as to
what is going on, etc. it's wonderful for that.
a pain to carry, but worth it (besides, I'm a
drummer - carrying the SFX-6 is NOTHING!).

both versions have their pros and cons, but I love
the keyboard one more just because I think it's a more
complete instrument and fits better into the mold that
Elektron designed it in. i.e. it's an instrument just a
*bit* more and its WAY more immediate (though, yes
a MIDI controller will help out that aspect a lot
with the SFX-60).

The keyboard is the shiznit, only get the desktop if portability is a HUGE
concern.
