elektrons + live 4/5

elektrons + live 4/5

2006-01-10 by niall munnelly

heya,

how suitable is live for midi control of elektron kit? i
haven't looked at the app since version 3, so it looks like
a lot's changed since then.

i ask about live specifically because of the elektrons'
pretty extensive CC/NRPN implementation, and wonder if
remote control's as straightforward as something like DP,
cubase, etc.

i know a few of you hear swear by live, but i'm not sure how
integrated your app and your instruments are. any clues
{offlist, if you deem this off-topic} would be appreciated.

cheers.

Hi,

Live can easilly (spellinmg?) control the MD as far as CCs goes - no
NRPN implementation in Live 5. If it's anything like DP or Cubase, I
don't know. You can make clips both for pattern change and direct
playing of the MD sound engine. But of course there's no way of reaching
or utilising the parameter locks when playing from an external sequencer
- but I guess you knew that!

Any other specific questions? Don't hesitate to ask!

Cheers,
Mikael

yep, hence the CCs ;)

otherwise, it behaves much the same as your bog-standard
midi sequencer, right? pencil in your notes here and there,
play back, enjoy?

bummer about the lack of NRPN support, since the special
trig tracks are programmed with those, iirc.

Live as a midi sequencer is far from "bog standard." It just takes a
little while mucking around with it to get into a very unique
groove. Too bad about the NRPN, but my solution is to make audio
clips out of changing bits and then not worry about it anymore. To
be honest, that is much easier and you can get things done faster.

You can also do much more with each clip than just play it back.
Rather than try to explain this, just download the latest demo.

Yep! Download the demo - it does everything except save...

The midi editing is not as deep as for example Cubase from what I
understand, but it's accessible and in my mind easy to get grasp of.
