don't buy just a midi controller. buy a keyboard with sounds, something 
cheap but cool, like a casio cz-101.

I've used the CZ-101 as a controller and I must say it would be better
to get something with more control... a CZ-1 isn't that much more
expensive, as synths go, and it has velocity, aftertouch, a mod wheel,
and I think another octave.

And of course it also has the CZ synth engine (with double the polyphony
of the CZ-101), another style of noise that you're unlikely to be able to
duplicate with anything else.

As a kontroller to my micro modular, I love the prophecy... small keyboard
but excellent sounds and lovely ribbon controller
