RCA is exactly the same as unbalanced 1/4''
As long as you don't use 1'4'' to RCA adapters there isn't signal degradation.
I use Mogami Quad cable RCA to 1'4''. It can't get more Pro than this.

And lets not forget... it's C64 sounds :-) you'll have to use a really beat 
up cable to get the 8 bit signal degraded.
