you can download a sound bank (group of presets) from the Elektron site to get started (you need midi out on your computer and a way to send sysex-like a sequencer or something like Bome's SendSX). The mono will trig notes via the buttons, you just need to set it up right - see the manual, mine did it by default when you have the correct midi channel assigned to its midi out. Since the Sid is a midi module, doing your homework on midi will help you alot as far as getting it up and going and the getting the most out of it.
Sequencing the Sid via a piano-roll in a sequencer plays it more like an instrument, trigging it from the mono will give it more of a sound module sound source feel to it, sequencing it from its internal wave sequencer gives it a distinctly lo-fi character.
a bank of knobs as a controller works well as does a set of keys, but they're not necessary - just a luxury.
you need to trig the Sid to get it to make a sound, a preset isn't necessary (you'll be making your own in no time) but trigging it is - again from an external sequencer, external note on commands - ie: from a keyboard, or via its internal sequencer.

Well, the controller came and was defective today so...now I still don't know if this sid
works (bought it off ebay). Can someone please tell me how I can play my Sid using my
Monomachines square keys? I'm new to MIDI and tried reading the manuals to both...but
they seem to be slim in this area...or tend to believe you already know midi. I just want to
test it. Also, he erased all of the patches on the Sid...when I bring up patch one now it is
blank... should it make some sort of sound as a blank patch? If not, what is a good
starting point?
