I would think that the difference has more to do with the analogue
subsystem after the DA! Like the OP-amps and how capacitors are set
up, and the power distribution etc... The DA:s are generally good
these days, it's more how much time is spent giving them a good
surrounding. In the MD and the Mono we use a separate PCB for all the
audio stuff to separate the digital (noise) from the analogue signals
the best we can.

...a modern computer with onboard audio is usually an excellent
example of semi-decent DA:s in a terrible environment, picking up all
the noise possible from inside. Like moving the mouse or reading from
the hard drive. :)
