YuSynth Random gates question

YuSynth Random gates question

2011-01-23 by drryle

I am a rank beginner. I've built the Yves Usson YuSynth Random Gates module kit from Bridechamber and it has a bit of problems.

http://yusynth.net/Modular/EN/RANDOMGATE/index.html

The gate input indexes but it isn't random. I am getting a repeating pattern. The pattern changes after a long power down but it still repeats.

Firstly, I'll admit the real problem is two-fold. My skills and the fact that (this is important) I actually had the XOR gates chip (CD4070) in backwards! Luckily I refuse to make anything now without good sockets so I simply reversed the chip and tried it again.

Is the CD4070 zapped or is there something else to look for?

David,
The 4070 is most likely fried. It had it's power pins reversed.

Hi David

Yes the CD4070 must have been damaged, when you reversed it you also had
it reversed powered which is something CMOS ICs don't like at all ;-)

I suggest that you replace the CD4070.

Thanks Doug and Yves. (sounds like a early American artist's name)

I have all three chips on order just in case. The 4006 got really warm on that first power-up. That is what made me inspect them closer. I'll replace them all.

If this is indeed the fix then I feel pretty lucky. I haven't actually made a kit like this (albiet pretty simple) since the 1980's Heathkit amps and PAIA P4700J build. I've just been doing small breadboard mods and stuff. I feel like a beginner again. New Weller solder station and all. Fun return to an old passtime hobby.

Thanks guys for inspiring me to get going again on DIY stuff.

David,

When you get them, be sure to measure power voltages at the IC sockets BEFORE inserting the chips, just to make sure of voltage level and polarity. Also make sure there are "reasonable" voltage levels around the board. Without the chips, you'll obviously have lots of unconnected "floating" pins, but a common sense approach armed with the schematic is a good one.

Are you powering from your DOTCOM PS?

Yes I have the power header made with the missing key pin and am using the dotcom QPS1 power supply.

That is a great idea. I'll check the data sheets for the voltage pins and measure at the sockets. Thanks a-million.
