Rattling keys

It has been quite a while since I last posted to the Disklavier file
swappers group.  (Where does the time go?)

Unfortunately for me, my reason for this post is to solicit opinions
about what is wrong with my piano and perhaps how to fix it myself.

I have had my 5"3" playback only DGP1XG grand Disklavier since
mid-1999. (I had to look in my database entry here on this site to
make sure!)  I have had it tuned once or twice a year and have had
good service after initial glitches in the solenoid mechanisms were
taken care of under warranty.  

A few days ago I began to notice a distinct reedy rattle or clicking
noise when I (or the solenoid) depressed the G3 key (G above C3). 
This G key produces the loudest noise; however the noise also occurs
with vigorous operation of one or two keys below and above the G,
lessening with the distance from the G. The noise seems to originate
under and perhaps slightly behind the keyboard. It leaves me with the
impression that something is loose or out of position.

I would be grateful for any self-help suggestions for this problem. It
would not seem to be a solenoid problem -- the noise occurs when the
piano is played manually as well as when it is playing under program
control. 

I realize that I am due - probably overdue - for a "major" tuneup and
regulation by a Yamaha technician. For budgetary reasons, I am trying
to defer that for a few more months.  In the meantime, have other
users experienced - and fixed - similar problems?

It almost sounds like a soundboard rattle.  Look for a
foreign object lying under the strings.  Sometimes kids
will put coins or marbles inside the round holes in the
plate.  If you can't find anything on top of the
soundboard, check the underside while the piano is
playing, and by pushing upwards on various sections,
see if the rattle goes away.  Could be a loose rib.
Another thing to try is put the lid down if it is
propped up.  If the rattle goes away, probably the case
screws need tightened as well as the screws in the
hinge that holds the two pieces of the lid together.

Mike,

I had a problem similar to yours and my problem turned out to be a pen that had fallen down into the action. With the fall board up, objects can easily roll onto the keys and cause rattling. I couldn't see the pen with a visual inspection, but was pretty sure there was some foreign object on the keys. I remedied this by removing the fallboard (which involved removing the two blocks on both ends of the keys). The fall board lifted directly out and there, laying right on top of the keys was a pen.

My symptoms were similar to yours. The rattling was most pronounced on one key and diminished as I played the keys further away from the offending one.

Let us know what your rattle turns out to be.

To access the top of the keys, all one needs to do is
lift straight up on the fallboard.  Put your thumbs on
the top (stretcher) and your fingers under the lip of
the fallboard.  No need to remove the cheek blocks.  To
replace the fallboard, rotate it forward to a 45 degree
angle, and put the notches on the side over the pins,
then push.
