I think the reason Yamaha uses their proprietary ESEQ format of MIDI files is to ensure that their PianoSoft disks are backwardly compatible with older models of Disklaviers. For that reason, I have great respect for this company. Can you imagine someone purchasing a Disklavier and it only working for 20 years when the piano will last 50 years? PianoBench probably knows more specifics on this, but the proprietary format allows compatibility with pedal data and those elusive controller messages. I think if I had a library of 300 disks there would certainly be favorite songs I would categorize, and others I would never play. Maybe on rainy days I would convert the songs I liked best to MIDI and be able to use playlists. If I didn't have such a long "to do" list, I might consider learning how to write a jukebox program. I wonder about being able to add such a feature to JAZZ++? This sequencer software is an open format, which to my understanding means that the code is available to anyone who wants to improve it. Perhaps someone might be interested in working on this?
