Keith, James, I was finally able to reach a couple of experienced techs at Yamaha and learned the following: * Recordings made from the Pro piano contain added XP data that adds additional control of the playback. The DKC500RW recognizes the additional XP data and will adjust the playback while the DKC850 will not recognize it. The enhanced XP playback experience is subtle and may not be discerned by listeners in blind side by side comparions on Pro pianos where only the controller has been changed. * The midi sounds from each controller are identical (XG format) except that the DKC850 can play more voicings simultanously. The differences should not be obviously discernable to causal listeners. Keith, can you elaborate on your comments regarding inferior digital sounds from DKC850 as compared to the DKC500RW? I plan to upgade to the DKC850 since I need the extra storage space, like the iPhone control, and internet features. I will probably also keep the original DKC500RW just in case. Not sure I would like the aesthetics of mounting both units – but that is also an option. Did you move the DKC500RW control unit from it's installed position under the right side? Also, if you recorded or played back using the DKC-850 did you notice any changes in the sound? Thanks James M.
