Re: [disklavier] Pianosoft Audio

2016-09-13 by Mark Fontana

So far, the downloadable Pianosoft Audio tracks consist of a MIDI file
and corresponding MP3 file that are played in sync by Enspire. If you
convert the MP3 file to a WAV file, you can use MID2PianoCD to merge the
pair into a legacy Pianosoft Plus Audio WAV file.

Regarding the disappearance of Pianosoft Plus Audio from the online
catalog, Yamaha is clearly moving away from physical media, and they
probably figured out that it's not possible to distribute Pianosoft Plus
Audio tracks in MP3 format (the lossy MP3 compression damages the
modulation scheme too much). But they could provide downloadable tracks
in FLAC or Apple Lossless formats, which have similar tagging
capabilities and lossless compression that preserves the Pianosoft Plus
Audio signal.

The E3 and DKC-850 *might* already have the ability to play
Enspire-style MID/MP3 file pairs directly, since there isn't any new
format involved. It's worth a try. If it doesn't work, seems like a
firmware update could make this possible, since there is no dependency
on special hardware.
