RE: [disklavier] "Windows Media Center" is Dead

2015-05-05 by Aaron Zornes

XBMC/KODI replaced XB Media Center … It is fabulous media manager open source tool ... runs on Linux, Windows XP/7/8/Vista, Mac, Android, (jailbroken) IOS devices, etc. etc. ... stream content off the web and/or streams content off your ripped DVDs/BDs on your devices/NAS servers … we then use iPhones, Androids and iPads as remote controls for even more ease-of-use ... even 5-6 year old kids and great grandparents pick up the user interface immediately

Most of my family, friends and neighbors in San Francisco area use it … and have “cut their cable” and said “good bye” to Comcast, DirecTV, AT&T, etc.

kodi.tv/download

There is a learning curve but http://fusion.tvaddons.ag makes it incredibly easy to configure … YouTube it.

We run it on all our laptops, phones, tablets and TVs (with spare laptops or $100-$200 Linux boxes such as ZOTAC)

Yes, Windows Media Center, combined with an

HDTV Tuner made a very attractive DVR because

Windows also supplied a national and local

channel guide and schedule free.

Yes, MediaMonkey is a good Media Player as is VLC

which often will play media files that other media

players can not.

Thank you for your reply. :-)

i forget what media center does. i know they dropped it from win 8 but you could add it. i was interested only because it was one option of many to make my own DVR. instead i bought a Tivo so never had to explore it further.

the best Media Player of all is Media Monkey. it does not do TV stuff. it has many addons and plugins and can even play MIDI files and display metadata if you add the plugin for MIDI and for reading metadata from a txt file. it can be simple plug and play or can get as complicated as you want.

basically, it is what Itunes would be if it were not a bloated pile of garbage. Mac users have been crying for a Mac version of Media Monkey for years and now it is sort of officially supported via plugins and something called wineskin. no reason to suffer with Itunes for PC (even worse than the Mac version) of Mac.

Hello Members of Disklavier,

By now most people using Windows for Disklavier

applications either use Windows XP "off-line" or have moved

on to Windows 7 or 8.1 or to an Apple iOS or Linux or Android.

For those in the Windows Camp, waiting in the wings is Windows 10.

(For owners of Windows 7 and 8.1, the Windows 10 upgrade will be free.)

But alas, in that migration, those who use "Windows

Media Center" will lose this program in Windows 10.

Therefore, heads up to "Windows Media Center" users.
