replacement membrane panels

back in July last year --Paul rumored about making/selling replacement switch panels-- (post #708) . i was hoping to hear an update on the progress of this noble effort.
this would be a real superhero move. kind of like saving an animal from extiction. sorry to be a pest

I would be onboard to purchase too! There has got to be a manufacturer here or overseas willing to do a small run of right and left panels.

You're not a pest, I just got frustrated with the effort. But I'll give it
another try. I have two Polarises with bum panels, too.

I found a few places that could do the job within easy driving distance (Los
Angeles area), so I could work with them in person, but none of them got
back to me with quotes. Then, I found that none of the export filters in
Visio 2000, which is what I drew the artwork in, produced usable output.
However, yesterday I obtained a copy of Visio 2003 which lets me export each
layer as a 500dpi TIFF, so that problem is solved. I'll try to find some
time over the next couple of weeks to look for suppliers again.

Paul,

Nelson Nameplate does 10 unit prototypes with a 24 hour quote turnaround. Looks like they could do the project justice.with a few updated printing options.

That's one of the companies I visited, spent an hour with, was reasonably
impressed by, and asked for a quote. I heard nothing back. I'll try them

Paul,

Would you be willing to take a straw poll on quantity and a per unit cost? I estimate a pair of working panels nicely executed is worth $200 to me. I think keeping these alive is worth the money!

Hi Paul,

When it gets closer to a reality, you can set the whole system up at groupbuy.com - This is how Andrew Jury and Jed Jorgensen handled their Polysix replacement mainboard project over in the Polysix group and it worked really well. I ended up buying 10 of these PCBS because as more people signed on the unit cost kept dropping and as we ordered more the price would drop again... :)

I completely agree with James - My Polaris still has a fully functional membrane panel, but I know the Synth Reaper awaits this classic unless I can arrange to have a backup membrane panel standing by. If such a part were to cost under $250 that would be a certain purchase for me, but I understand that low volume runs could mean it costing more than that.

While I am posting - I take it that the replacement design will use ribbons with a plastic formulation that is less prone to cracking with age? I have Roland synths from the 80s and 90s that use these kind of connectors and none of them have aged appreciably so surely the original issue is specific to the Polaris and its choice of ribbon connector supplier?

Anyhow you have my thanks and appreciation for taking the time and trouble to look into kicking off this project!

Cheers,

Tony

I think I prefer to buy a bunch (minimum 25, perhaps 50) on spec, and just
sell them on eBay, since I'll have to be individually package them and
reship them.

I doubt they'll cost that much, but that's not based on any actual quotes.

I have no expertise in plastics or chemistry, but my experience is that
membrane switches (other than the top surface) are normally made out of
polyester (Mylar), and this has a pretty much unlimited lifetime. For
instance, the original Chroma membrane panels have exhibited no such
failures. The Polaris panels failed because they were either made out of
something else (exactly what that may be is lost in the files of Fender of
Japan), or because of some interaction between the green masking and the
plastic. I intend to leave the tails unmasked (since silver oxide is
harmless), and to make sure that whoever makes these doesn't use anything
nonstandard. That's about all I can do.

There is reasonable risk here (especially for Paul) but every 'pledge' brings our group closer to keeping these great synths going for a good long while! I'll vote with my contribution towards the project to secure a set or 2! The groupbuy.com also looks like a winner too.

Mine is working good for the time being but I look forward to the day when I can re-solder the ribbon connectors back on the board where they belong. I bet most panels don't many more repairs left in them.

Chime in now Polaris owners, destiny calls!

Re: replacement membrane panels

2011-04-06 by digital_lofi

I've been lurking on the group since I acquired a Polaris II a few months ago and undertook restoring it. My fix isn't going great, but I haven't completely given up hope. (I had to completely disassemble it and clean it completely with Q-Tips and denatured alcohol. Now, aside from needing to finish fixing the ribbon and connectors, there is no output and I need to rebuild the output jacks —they were pretty chewed up.) Anyway I would definitely be interested in this and if the group-buy was properly secure. I would likely buy 2, maybe more if we can get the bulk price down enough. One way or another I'm going to get a working Polaris. ;-)

Your preference runs the show here - I just wanted to make the option known on the off-chance a groupbuy hadn't been considered.

Sure thing - I put that figure up as the amount where I would start to dither over buying a replacement panel. If the price was under $200 I would definitely order one. If it was under $150 I would buy two as extra insurance... If the replacement panel could be produced for under $100 I would order 3-5 of them to stockpile for future repair opportunities.

DX-7, JX-10, JX-8P and others here are just fine with their membrane switches and plastic ribbon harnesses- If treated with respect and kept out of direct sunlight (UV) these should last as long as the rest of the instrument... But as we all know, they don't on Polaris.

Aha. Very plausible theory regarding the green masking - I'm not plastics expert but it certainly makes sense to me.

Re: [chromapolaris] replacement membrane panels

2011-04-07 by steven pistrich

wow--what an encouraging response---  i could also use two sets.
it seems that most serious Polarisheads have  at  least  2 -- of which one is disfunctional and needs new panels .  i seems to have three and only one  works now.
I have 5  different synths and the polaris still seems to me to have the nicest basic tone  and  sonic range  despite some odd features--well worth further investment.

Please count me in for at least one set. I've had a Polaris II on the shelf for about a year, waiting for a repair to one of the membranes.

Thanks for your efforts

I have one Polaris with working (for now) panels, and one that is dead.  I would be in for 2 sets if the cost is $200-$250.

Thanks, Paul, for your efforts!

Hi,
Forgive my lack of knowledge with the internals of the Polaris.  The left side of the membrane panel does not work, i.e. button presses don't do anything, though the sliders on that side work.  I opened the Polaris some time ago and noticed the cracked ribbon cable that is the source of the problem.  Is this part of the membrane panel, or is it a connection between 2 circuit boards beneath the panel?  I can't quite remember how it looked in there and I don't have the service manual.  Anyway the buttons do function on the right side, so I'm assuming the left side would work, if the ribbon cable was replaced or fixed.  I would be interested in a membrane panel, if it would fix my current problem.
Thanks!
Frank

Please let all of us know when we go in on the panels.  I will also contribute to the cause.  I need the Polaris back in working order.

That's the tail of the membrane panel, and that's what always fails. I think
the left panel is more likely to fail, because of the tight bend in the
tail, but I've got a bad right panel tail too.

Hi all,

I have a polaris and I would be in for a set of replacement membrane panels provided they are made of tougher stuff than the originals.

Well, it looks like there is plenty of interest. And I have now nice
accurate artwork for all the graphics and laser cuts, in a form that any fab
should be able to use. So next week, I'll make the rounds again, and try to
get someone to make up a bunch of these. Hopefully in a month or so, I can
have them available.

I will do that. I think you have the best fix to date! The rest of the membrane will turn to dust before your fix!

BTW, did you get those polaris keys ok?

Re: replacement membrane panels

2011-05-09 by sullik1

Hi.
If this was to go on a group-buy, what price differences would we be looking at?

How much will a production cost difference of 25 vs 250 be?

I bought 10 polysix PCB's as well. It was a group-buy that surprised everyone I think (as most group-buys do).

I have 4 polaris at the moment, and several friends with broken polaris that I did planned to repair.
I will perhaps buy one set if we talk about closer to 100 bucks. But will most likely repair them all myself as I have done many times before. If this will however go to a group buy with a good discount for quantity then count me in for 10 sets right away.

Please, please reconsider the group-buy option!! :)
You will sell far far more (4-10 times more I would estimate)
It will be some work shipping out everything. But it's only one time you do that. More people will buy several sets. And far more people with working polaris will buy a backup, or even replace the membranes right away before the old one is broken. And in the end it's much more efficient then selling one by one on ebay...
And you should of course take whatever profit you find acceptable for the job. You can also then buy far bigger stock for less money to sell on ebay to whoever missed it after the group-buy.

Whatever you choose this is a great project for people not being able to repair the panels themselves. The polaris deserves the best!

regards

I fixed my brothers recently acquired Polaris in 15 minutes the other day! His left side ribbon's had an odd curve into the connector at almost 90 degree's. A small 1/2 trim was only needed to get this one going. Wish fixing mine was that easy!

I'm still game on fresh membranes!

The polaris deserves the best!

regards

Re: [chromapolaris] Re: replacement membrane panels

There's couple documented fixes Mario.

1. If the crack is close to the connector, trim, remove the green protectant with nail polish remover and reinsert. Usually, the cracks are too far away for this easy fix.
2. Ribbon crack is too far away: As above except the desoldering of the edge connector(s) with thin gauge wire to bring the connector closer to the membrane tail.
3. Identify location of crack, remove green protectant, and use caig trace paint to fix the traces. The ribbon will need to be strengthened or backed with packing tape or something similiar especially if the ribbon is brittle.

Hi Sullik , I agree with You, that not many musician are able to open a Polaris and start soldering or remove Membrane Panels.

Hey Paul,

Any news on the replacements and how they are coming along?

I'd love to know how much longer I have to wait.

Thanks,

Parts Chroma Polaris for Sale

2011-09-28 by el macaco

Hello everybody,

So I'm getting impatient waiting for replacement membrane panels for my Chroma Polaris, and I wonder if anyone would like a parts unit or to take it and wait themselves.

The ribbons tabs were all salvaged except the three conductor one, and that one seems too far gone for repair at this point.  the keys are perfect, one end cheek is loose due to a missing bolt, and I have a spare panel circuit board with extra sliders, LED's and other parts.

If anyone is interested please make an offer, the CEM chips alone are fairly valuable but I don't like the idea of selling them and junking the rest, but you could if you want.

Pictures will be available to the interested soon.

Thanks.

Ed

I'd like to apologize for the delay on replacement panels. It's hard for me
to find time to work on it. However, I received one quote a while ago, which
I felt was too high--I would have had to sell the panels for $300 a pair,
instead of the hoped for $200. At the moment, I'm waiting for two more
quotes. At this point, I think I'll accept the lowest quote whatever it is,
even if the price bumps up. But I expect to get the quotes within the week.

Thanks man!

No need for apologizing, a project like that has to compete with real life concerns.

300 doesn't sound that bad considering a more reliable front panel, but hopefully you will get a cheaper quote.

Any idea what the lead time on the production could be?  Weeks / Months?  Are you going to take pre orders?

Thanks,

Ed

The quote I tentatively rejected said four weeks. I have no idea if that's
typical, but I'm sure it won't be much less than that.

There are probably cheaper ways to do this, ordering stuff from China
perhaps, but I've decided not to go that route. If I order fifty, and they
show up with the wrong color, or of obviously poor quality, then I've got
more of a problem than I can deal with. So I'm limiting myself to L.A. area
companies, so that I can go hold their hand as they import the artwork and
set things up.

Then, of course, there's packaging. I've decided to ship them sandwiched
between two pieces of hardboard or Masonite, so that's fairly cheap, and
only requires a trip to Home Depot.

If I were to accept a quote today, I could probably get everything turned
over to the company in a week, then they'd take whatever time they'd take,
then it would take another week to package them and put them on eBay.

I'm not bothering with pre-orders. I have enough cash that I can buy a pile
of them on spec.

Great!  Thanks again for doing this.  Those turn around times sound reasonable, seems like in 2-4 months we should have them if all goes as planned.

Good call on having them made in the US, and in your area, better to pay more, but pay once.

Also, you might consider selling at least some outside of ebay, since the buy it now cost, the 3 % paypal fees will eat a little chunk of your earnings, unless you own stock in ebay or just don't care, an informal email order could be a bit more beneficial. Makes little difference to the buyer though.

Thanks for restoring the hope of this Polaris living again!

Ed

P.S.  if someone still wants my Polaris, I may still be interested in a trade or sale, but maybe not...

Paul,

It's good to hear this project is still underway...and I remain on board for buying two replacement panels. If necessary, I'd be willing to pay more for the higher quality parts.
Will $200 to $300 actually be the final cost of a pair?
