Do any Polarises have unsocketed ICs?

Do any Polarises have unsocketed ICs?

2010-10-06 by Paul D. DeRocco

All the units I've looked at have sockets on the main board. Has anyone seen
a unit that has ICs soldered to the board?

Every Polaris I've ever seen has had socketed ICs (which I've always
appreciated, from a repair perspective).

Great. A friend of mine has figured out a way to drastically reduce the
noise in the Polaris, but it involves lifting some chip pins and connecting
them in the air. He'll probably include a set of pre-wired chips in the kit
when he finishes his new output board design, so that it won't require any
soldering.

What noise?

I've been searching the list-posts to see if this output board ever came to fruition but haven't found anything . . . did this ever happen?

Alternatively, are there other suggestions to mod the output board besides dropping a TL074 in place of the LM348?

Cheers,
James

My friend has built one replacement output board, and it works nicely, but
hasn't done a production run yet. I'll try to light a fire under him. I have
four Polarises that would make nice homes for his boards.

That probably wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. The real problems are
computer noise on the grounds and power supplies, digital noise coming in
through the error squawk line, and pseudo-random noise coupling from the
digital noise generator line into the output summing busses.

Thanks for that info.

I'd be happy with a schematic and parts list (hand drawn on a cocktail napkin?). I've never built anything before where I had to source/make my own PCB, but beyond that I'm sure I could cobble it together . . . and I'm sure the good folks of this group could give me some suggestions how to go about creating the board itself.

Cheers,
James
