Having Problem Loading Patches

Having Problem Loading Patches

2004-08-27 by kornelious23

Hey guys, long time no post. Last time I checked in I was having
inner-flexible cable problems and I just decided to let it sit until
two days ago. Thanks to bkuris, your info helped me out a lot on that
one.

Anyway, I'm having problems trying to load the original patches.
Here's the background info: I took the CD of the original patches
(wav files) and copied them to tape so I could load them into the
Polaris via a tape recorder/player that I have. I'm going out of my
headphone output of my tape recorder into the Sync In via a quarter
inch cable. I set the Polaris up for Load All and start the tape.
Each time I try to load them it cuts out on me. I've played a little
bit with different volumes coming out of the tape recorder but it
seems to do it with most volumes. The Upper Function button as well
as the sound of the patches(the timecode type sound) cuts out on me.
I've tried Load All and Load Prog and it happens on both. It cuts out
right after the first intro sound leading into the main 'timecode'
type sound. And I believe I have the Cassette function and Sync
In/Out functions set up right, but I could be wrong.

I have just replaced the original Matsushita D-cell batteries with
new ones two days ago as well if that means anything (although I had
already lost my patches before this because I pulled the jumper
connected to the batteries).

I appreciate any help on this one. I'm quite sure it's user error
since I'm not that fluent at loading patches from tape. Thanks for
your time. Kris.

I remember the volume level of the tape was important and adjusting it could help. Also make sure any noise reduction is turned off. I have a bad tape also, which only 1/2 loads..
good luck

You should be able to play it right off the cd, or PC into the
Polaris. Maybe the clarity would help? I do all my patches via sysex
for the Polaris, but every other synth I've loaded up via the tape
method, I always just played the wav off the PC into it.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I'll try those things tonight and
let you know how it goes.

Since I'm finally digging into the Polaris after letting it sit for
awhile, can you enlighten me on your sysex route. Are you using
Sounddiver, and does someone have the original patches in sysex? Once
again I really appreciate the help and quick responses. Kris.

I'm working on a major revision to my Rhodes Chroma site
(www.redrooffs.com/chroma) and there will be a page of Polaris
resources. If anyone has patches to contribute (in sysex or SoundDiver
format), send them to me and I'll include them.

That's great news Chris!

Now as I read this I realize I could have asked for such a page ages ago but that never came up with me.
But creating some polaris pages on your excellent website would be more than welcom I guess for all polaris members.
And feel free to ask us anything for contributing to the website.

"Are you using

Indeed I am, I actually started using Midi Quest XL for all of my
other sysex gear, but it dosn't support the Polaris (only the Chroma).

I'd be more than happy to contribute patches for your site Chris, even
though I don't have a Chroma, your site was still a great wealthj of
interesting information to me :). I'll email you a link for them once
I get some up.

Cheers,
Byron

Anything that you think will be valuable, I will include. Currently I
have:

- link to this mailing list
- links to relevant Chroma articles (Vintage Synths, my Dodds/Williams
interview)
- links to other relevant info at the site (where to order manuals; the
ads page; service contacts)
- Service Manual and schematics from Ben Kuris (thanks, Ben!)
- MIDI Implementation manual from David Gowin (Chroma and Polaris
owner)*
- links to related ChromaTalk mailing list threads, including:
- pics and discussion, Polaris I vs. II
- explanations of the Polaris prototype colour scheme
- "Triad" interface discussion
- several other miscellaneous topics
- links to a few (minimal) Polaris reviews and sites

*This is available, though not linked, from the current site:
http://www.redrooffs.com/chroma/files/polaris/midimanual.pdf

It seems to me that the obviously missing information is patches and
user documentation.

Excellent--thanks.

I'm currently aiming for an October launch.
