Regarding spammage

Regarding spammage

2008-05-05 by fuse01v

Hello,

Spam is destroying this community but kudos for Yahoo in filtering the
most out. But its impossible for them to filter out all so I have to
ban people manually which is a real pain.
In fact Chris Ryan's site with Polaris information probably is more
useful but I'll try to keep it working as long as possible.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I use Mailman software to run the Rhodes Chroma list (it's actually hosted by a friend of mine). We've had zero spam over the years, due to the fact that only subscribers can post. There is often a fair amount of non-subscriber email but the list never sees it; as administrator I just delete it every day or two.

If the Yahoo! group totally breaks down, I could probably add a Polaris group. The issue is the list archives, which have a fairly primitive representation in Mailman; I like to make them public and link them into my site, and do so "by hand" [2].

Yahoo has a feature that lets you moderate new members, until you're sure
they're for real. Given that the traffic on this list is microscopic, that
level of moderation would be trivial to handle.

Thank you for the input.

I guess there are several forums where there could be a Polaris
subsection.
Jupiter forums.
Vintagesynth forums.
Extech forums.
Analogue heaven.

For now Yahoogroups is good enough I guess. I just started it since it
was the fastest cheap way to get a mailing list going and being able
to share files.
And pherhaps in the future Yahoogroups will become obsolete for
whatever reason. Currently it seems to be fine. I guess Chris Ryan has
dibs on continuing the mailing list. Or if anyone has a good
suggestion what an alternative to Yahoogroups would be its worth
listening to.

I think Paul's suggestion about moderating new members is a good one. This is a low volume list, but there is a very low volume of spam as well. I don't think Yahoo Groups is going anywhere soon (particularly after Microsoft dropped its bid to buy Yahoo).

I don't get on yahoo groups much anymore. I've come to despise yahoo
with all their spyware tendencies. I hope they go belly up and away
frankly. But yeah coming in after a time to find nothing but spam
messages is pretty silly. It would be cool if there were a chat that
would 'ring' you if you are logged on so that there could be live
interaction between people when someone wants to talk about something.
I was going to ask if anyone has seen the problem where you go to do
the DAC R46 adjustment but..the LED never comes on. It seems to have
signal out of the dac buffer. Hmmm. -Bob

One axiom of the internet is that free services never stay free over time.
But the chat idea is nice. Pherhaps someone knows a cool IRC server
which is willing to host a polaris channel?
IRC is extremely old school but still very viable. Heck even most chat
proggrams support IRC.

I think most people use this as a mailing list. All the list traffic (which
should ideally be spam-free) shows up in your in-box, and you deal with it
when you see it. You don't have to "go somewhere" (other than to your e-mail
program, which you use all the time anyway) to see it. I participate in lots
of Yahoo groups, but whenever I sign up on some chat board, I never wind up
participating, because I have to "go there" just to see if there are any new
messages.

That looks like a misprint in the manual. R46 is indeed the DAC trim, but
it's done with a high-res DVM between TP1 and TP2. If you're talking about
LF-D-4, it's really R45, the ADC trim, that needs to be adjusted for that.

ahhh cairumba. I wondered by the location if that wasn't the case.
Thanks I'll try it again. Otherwise the DAC is probably unusable I'm
guessing. Not sure if I can find one of those anywhere. They also
didn't note in the power supply adjustments that the pot designators
change in the Polaris II. But an unusually decent manual overall
otherwise.
