Help with moving forward with this Polaris

Help with moving forward with this Polaris

2017-03-31 by nuwavboy@...

I've sent a message that doesnt seem to be posting, maybe because of attachments? I'll post pictures seperately...

Soooo....got the Polaris, it's missing the 10000uf16V cap in the power supply, so thats a problem right away.

It's missing ALL the CEM3372 filter chips. Ugh. I found someone who will sell me 6 of them for 225$ - it's also missing a CEM3374. Ugh. I can probably get one for around 50-70$?

So, after the purchase price (400$ shipped), +300$ for CEM's, another 225$ for a membrane panel, is this financially viable to move forward on?

I will do the work myself, I'm afraid that something else will pop up that will make it not worth fixing.

I will post pictures of the board and see if anyone spots anything really bad. There are definitely some IC's missing, I'm just not sure yet which ones besides the CEM's.

thanks for any and all help

It looks someone had a reason, that he used this Polaris as a spare part
reservoir. It must have stopped working, before he decided to "bone" it.
You don't shred a working chroma polaris. So I assume, after you will
have redone the capacitor and the CEMs and the panel you will find, that
the CPU is not working (or what else ever).

I have to admit: I doubt it makes sense to go on.

I would say it depends on what your choices are. If you could return the Polaris
and get your money back, then buy a different one, I would say that would be a better
option, as this one has clearly been used as a parts machine. I agree that probably
there was something else wrong with it before they started removing parts, although
it may have just been that the panel stopped working.

But maybe you cannot get your money back, or maybe only half of it, due to shipping
costs? If so, then you may be stuck with the $900 total cost (plus the cap and whatever
other IC's are missing. Maybe another $10-20) Of course some of the other CEM chips
that are not missing could be bad.

$900 is not a horrible price, but you should be able to do better. The Polaris does not
get the love that it deserves...

Well, I realized I have a Prophet 600 that has 3372 chips, so I think I'm going to try and redo the power supply first and take it from there...

Can anyone tell me what chips go into Z18 and Z64? Those are the only other ones that seem to be missing

Z18 is a 74LS244 octal bus driver, which you can get anywhere for cheap. Z64 is an MM5837 noise generator, which isn't common, but I probably have some which could have one of basically for the postage plus a dollar. I'm not at home right now, though, so I can't check.

A copy of the service manual (including schematics) is available on-line
here:

http://www.rhodeschroma.com/?id=polarisservicemanual

There's also a copy of the parts list here:

http://www.rhodeschroma.com/?id=polarisservicepartslist

Z18 appears to be a 74LS244:

http://www.rhodeschroma.com/content/polarisservicemanual/polarisserviceschematics/computermemorydatapanelbuffersbattery.pdf

Z64 appears to be a noise generator chip (MM5837)

ok, recapped the power supply, replaced the 74sl244, so I'm missing

the MM5387 noise generator
One CEM3374
ALL CEM3372's
ONE SN74HC374N

Am I going to hurt anything by powering it back on?
I have a Prophet 600 I can pull the CEM3372's from, but I dont want to take a chance yet in powering it up with those in.

Someone was definitely in here before, the front panel has been wired (hopefully correctly), the solder connections look well done, but...

There are two 74HC374s. Z56 is essential for running, but Z22 is only necessary for the Chroma Interface. But even if it doesn't run, you won't blow anything out if the supply is producing the correct voltages. You might want to unplug the outputs of the supply and check them with a voltmeter. If you have a shorted out regulator, you could pop a lot of chips in a fraction of a second.

Thanks for the help on this Paul -

 Where it stands now -

powers up, but lights come on, most of them, turn off and back on, different lights come on..etc...but mainly all to most lights come on and are non-responsive

The left side panel has had the ribbon connector extended out from the circuit board, its done well, I checked for continuity and connections are good.

Right side panel is cracked on both pigtails. I tried cutting back and using acetone, but they cracked again, there's not much left, can't really make the bend anymore. I could attempt to solder wires to it, I do have a temp controlled iron and could try it on low wattage, but....

So I'm stuck  - do I throw good money after bad? I'm in it for 400$, then another 300$ for 6 CEM3372 and 1 CEM3374, then another 200$+ for a new membrane panel...

Do I sell it for parts? 5 CEM3374, 50$ a pop...I hate to see something like this turned into a carcass, but I'm afraid of what else may lurk underneath. My gut tells me a new membrane panel and new CEM's will fix it right up, but...

RE: [chromapolaris] Help with moving forward with this Polaris

I wanted to check my Polaris before replacing the membranes too.

I was able to wire up some switches in place of several front panel ones to
run a few tests. Like the one that turns on all of the LEDs, and the one that
tests the voices.

Also, if you can get one voice working, then you can test all of the CEM chips,
right? Could you test the CEM chips in a different synth, like your P600?

With an ohmmeter, you could see if the keyboard contacts are working.

It might take some time, but you should be able to test it before replacing the panels.
Too bad, I just threw out my old Polaris panels last week, after saving them for several
years. You might have had more luck restoring them than yours, if just for a little while.

Well, went ahead and bit the bullet, bought new 3372's and 1 3374 - ordered remaining missing IC's, recapped the power supply, will change out the voltage regulators for shits and giggles, and will order a new membrane from Paul...

I'll be in it for around 900$ in "parts" - all my labour, but at least I'll know whats in it...

I think the person before me wired up the left hand membrane, then the right side went out and they just had it, took the 3372's out and called it a day...

I'll finish the project....unfortunately I have a soft spot for hard luck cases, used to work on Spitfires and MG's when I was younger....not much of a return on investment, but if I get this up and running then it'll be a keeper....

I'll also go ahead and burn new operating Eproms as I suppose they could be shot also...

Go with version 11?

I’m sure it’s not an easy decision but congratulations on committing to keeping another Polaris alive.

I went out and spent $4 today on M4 screws/washers/nuts to stick through the panel and membrane to keep things aligned during panel replacement and I’ve already got a pint of adhesive remover waiting so I am determined to finally replace my panels this weekend after putting it off forever.

  Wish me luck

Looking at the photos on the Polaris site (e.g.,
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/chromapolaris/photos/albums/94582759/lightbox/1719827875?prop=eupdate#zax/1719827875)
do I see that only Qty 2 RAM chips are installed - and those are 6116's?

Paul D. can confirm, but before I'd expect you'd otherwise be able to
see 'normal' operation I'd expect that more RAM would be needed (either
as more chips - or different chips) - e.g., at least Qty 2 6264's - or
Qty 8 6116's:

It might run with four 6116s, but not two. But if you have to buy anything, buy 6264s, and you might as well fill it up. They can't be that expensive.

ok - - ordered 6 6264's

All remaining CEM chips and misc missing IC's

Re-capped the power supply, and will be installing new voltage regulators soon.

Will be ordering new panel this week.

Will be burning new OS eproms - will 27256 work instead of 27128's?

 Will install new slider....

I will photograph as I go...fingers crossed!

I believe 27256 will work, as long as you program the upper half, rather than the lower half, but I haven't tried it. But there's probably nothing wrong with the old ones, if you erase them and reprogram them. The fading that occurs over 30 years is just the charge leaking off, not a permanent degradation.

Why are you installing new voltage regulators? Are they burnt out?

Was going to replace all the voltage regulators as a preemptive measure...Is that not really necessary? Ive just had 2 synths recently with bad regulators -

So...list of items to do...

New OS Eproms burned
Install CEM 3372's and CEM3374
Install missing remaining IC's
Remove and install new membrane
Install new memory chips (6 6464)

Cross fingers and toes and hope for the best

I wouldn't replace the regulators, as long as they're putting out the right voltage.

It may go without saying - but just for clarity, it wouldn't be expected
that you'd keep the existing two 6116 chips and additionally install six
6464's - but instead you'd remove the current 6116 chips, install the
six 6464's into locations Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5, Z6 and Z7 and then change the
jumper on the board to reflect 8k chips vs. 2k.

That's true. You can't combine 6116s with 6264s. But the Polaris measures the amount of available RAM, so any number of pairs of 6264s will work.
