Digital Chroma at NAMM

Digital Chroma at NAMM

2017-01-19 by Paul D. DeRocco

Not the Polaris, but its big brother. As some of you might know, I've
built a digital version of the Chroma, as a hobby project, much more
powerful than the original instrument. And as I've done the last couple of
years, I've got it set up in the Hilton next to the Anaheim Convention
Center for the duration of the NAMM show. If anyone is in the vicinity,
and would like to hear it or play it, e-mail me at
mailto:pderocco0@... (rather than the address below, so I can get it
on my phone). Please put Digital Chroma in the subject, since I get a lot
of spam.

Hey Paul,

Do you have any audio or video demos of your digital Choma online?

Cheers,
James

No, not yet. I hope to find some better musician than I to do some sort of demo.

Maybe you can ambush someone at NAMM! ;)

I'm sorry if you've answered this question before, but I'm just curious if this is purely a personal passion project, or if you have any plans to perhaps make this available to the public in some way?

I hadn't heard of this.
Video and audio would be great, but pictures, information, schematics & code ;) would all be very interesting to see.

Exactly what I'm trying to do.

As soon as I get a web site up, I'll make it available as a kit. It won't be cheap, because it replaces pretty much everything inside the instrument, and there was a lot of software work that went into it. And the market is tiny, so I'd be lucky to sell a couple dozen even with zero profit.

I won't be releasing code or any other internal docs. But I'll release the various manuals, like the operating manual, the parameter descriptions, and the MIDI implementation.

In a nutshell: 64 voices, stereo with reverb, lots more parameters than the original Chroma, selective pitch bend like the Polaris, selective modulation or anything else that you can do with levers or pedals, modulatable resonance, modulatable pan, two-line display that lists parameter names and value descriptions instead of just numbers, modern connectivity (USB MIDI device, USB MIDI host, S/PDIF, Ethernet, flash drive), 14 pounds lighter than the original.

Try and grab Rachel Flowers if she's there and willing. If anyone can put a keyboard through its paces then she can.

Digital Chroma at NAMM

As usual, I'm setting up a Digital Chroma in a hotel room near the NAMM
show. If anyone is there, and would like to play it, email me personally
at the address below, and I'll get back to you and we can set up a time.

Arigato, Paul, re: Digital Chroma at NAMM

Hi, Paul,
from Tony in Japan.

I'm a long-time Yahoo Chroma/Polaris 'subscriber'...however virtually never comment, Online. (Shy?/Busy?/ Lazy? Not sure, myself....)

Anyway, the reason to comment NOW: a !digital CHROMA! ? *Bring it ON, man!*

I almost managed to buy a Chroma Expander from that Chicago place that sold/serviced them, 87ish. I still regret not moving on that.... If you've turned designed a SoftSynth Chroma or Digital Chroma 21st Century keyboard, I'm ALL EARS.

Paul, Thanks/Arigato: you are keeping the Chroma/Polaris flame alive. (Now, if we could somehow get the Chroma to do Single Trigger.... 😃 :-). )
