The EPROM firmware images are available free-of-charge from the Rhodes
Chroma site (Polaris sub-section) here:

http://www.rhodeschroma.com/?id=polariseproms

As long as you have the files any local tech or person with an EPROM
burner would be able to prepare the chips for you.

Back on 11/22/2014, I sent Chris a later version, in zip form, which I
still don't see on the site. The last version I had developed at Fender
was actually rev 10, but it had a tiny bug in it which I recently fixed,
and bumped it up to rev 11. If it wasn't received, I can send it again.

As to the differences between 9 and 10, I don't have a clear record of
that, but I believe I added experimental support for a faster processor
that used a 24MHz crystal. I don't think there are any functional or tonal
differences.

Paul - from an earlier post (in 2011) there are '9 Star' versions of
EPROM code also available - these are available/referenced here:

The difference is the way the velocity is applied to the volume envelope
amplitude. (It's not a different velocity curve.) 9* has the pre-9
response, which is linear with a small offset, while 9 has a breakpoint in
the curve so that the volume is lower except at max volume:

vel v0-v9 v9*-v11
--------------------
0 1024 0
| | |
31 8464 3968
32 8704 4096
| | |
63 16144 16000

The vel column is the internal velocity, which is half the MIDI velocity.

I always felt that the old curve was lousy. (It wasn't even "curved".)
MIDI 64 is supposed to be "medium", but it's only 6db below the peak. And
the offset at the bottom made it impossible to go down more than 24db. The
new curve starts at zero, and is 12db down in the middle.

But some people seem to like the old response more. Any comments?

Chris, do you think you could post that to the site? My Polaris is
running rev. 5, and I'd like to update it to the latest & greatest.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Sorry for the ridiculously long delay. You can now find the download on the Polaris EPROM Code page at the Chroma site.

Hi ,
I downloaded the Rev. 11 Firmware, and now I have these files polaris.bin
z10_8k.bin
z11_8k.bin
z12_8k.bin
z12_16k.bin
z13_8k.bin
z13_16k.bin
I thought to have 4 file for each eprom .
Why 6 files ?
Is there the uP firmare  too ?

Best regards.

The overall firmware is 32KB in size.

So - you either load this as four 8KB EPROM images, or two 16KB EPROM
images (depending on whether you're using 2764 or 27128 EPROM devices.)

The .zip file has the images provided for either case (e.g., 4 images if
using four 8KB EPROMs, or 2 images if using two 16KB EPROMs)

This is the main/full firmware for the polaris (i.e., this is the
processor firmware).
