New front panels!

New front panels!

2013-12-14 by Michael DeAngelis

Hi all,
Happy to report I successfully installed my new front membrane panels and every button is working perfectly! The removal and installation went as planned thanks to the great work and documentation by our good friend Paul DeRocco!
As it turns out, I still have an issue with getting my voices to sound when pressing "lower function/tune all." While doing that should result in the Master LED flashing each time a voice is tuned, I get no flashing and therefore no sound at all. Occasionally after letting it sit for a while it will tune all six voices and I'm back 100%. Could this be a power supply issue? Any insight as to how to get this fixed would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Questions:

1) When it does appear to tune all voices, does it sound in tune?

2) When it fails to tune, do the switches and LEDs continue to work, or
has the computer crashed?

3) When it fails to tune, have you powered off and on and retried it
multiple times, to see if it's just a matter of chance, rather than a
matter of waiting a while?

4) Does it ever tune some of the voices but not all?

Hi Paul,
Thank you for replying. I have answered your questions below. Hopefully my answers reveal something to you. Last night I let my Polaris sit for an hour or so powered up and I got it to tune all voices. I had a great and long night with a functional front panel!

Questions:

1) When it does appear to tune all voices, does it sound in tune?

Yes, perfectly.

2) When it fails to tune, do the switches and LEDs continue to work, or
has the computer crashed?

Everything continues to work. When I press Lower Function - Tune All both LEDs are lit right after I press Tune All and then they both turn off resulting in no sound.

3) When it fails to tune, have you powered off and on and retried it
multiple times, to see if it's just a matter of chance, rather than a
matter of waiting a while?

Yes. Not sure if that worked or not or just a coincidence but it did seem to work a handful of times. I usually end up waiting an hour or more before it works. Sometimes it never does.

4) Does it ever tune some of the voices but not all?

Yes. Sometimes I'll get four or five voices tuned on the first successful tuning. When I hit Tune All again all six voices tune usually after a few more attempts.

They're $180 a set, plus shipping. Give me your address (in a private
e-mail) and I'll give you an exact quote.

[chromapolaris] Repair/Replace broken slider

2013-12-29 by Brinkmann Music

Well, my mint Chroma Polaris was attacked by a falling ride cymbal
resulting in two bent and damaged sliders in the filter section on the
left hand panel: resonance and sweep depth. They are both loose and
nonfunctional. Resonance slider does respond if you press very hard
on it.

I have never cracked open the Polaris (no need as the membranes are in
excellent shape). Can the sliders be easily replaced (or swapped)?
If so, does anyone have two spares or can direct me to a source for
parts? Or, is an entire replacement left panel needed? (I hope not!).

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I was helping a friend repair his Polaris recently.   He had a spare front panel pcb with pots on it.   We were planning to steal some pots from that one to replace bad ones on the other board.   Then we noticed that they were different pots, with different hole patterns, and not interchangeable.   So at least two different styles of sliders were used in different Polaris revs.   It may be possible for a good technician to repair the sliders on your unit.   He would need to remove the pc board from the synth, desolder the sliders, probably take them apart, bend as needed, re-assemble, and then solder back onto the board.  Maybe Paul can suggest a source for replacement sliders for the Polaris.   It's often easier to fix up the old ones than to find the correct new ones.

Hi,

i just got a Chroma polaris with a number of failing buttons on the left half of the board.Thankfully i can still play with all the presets but it would be nice to modify the oscillators and use the sequencer so i am wondering if Paul is still selling kits? By the way his email on the chrom polaris website bounces back.

Cheers,

Alex
