Slider front panel not working properly

Slider front panel not working properly

2013-01-02 by sukhoy27@yahoo.com

Happy New year to everyone ,
I just complete to replace the membrane switch Panel , thanks to Paul very detailed Photo instructions , and so my Polaris model 301420 still play like new !!!
But probably because is has bend not working for 5/6 years something happens and the panel slider from Master Volume to the assignable control when moved works only 40% . The sliders that has yo be in the centre working position works only when moved down , but not moved up.

May someone help me ???

So what's wrong with the bend? Did you do the lever calibration? That's
LOWER FUNCTION, A, 7, then move both levers through their entire ranges,
then press LOWER FUNCTION again. It's probably a good idea to do all the
calibration procedures, if you can manage to follow them in English.

Sometimes it's possible to take a slider apart, clean it, and put it back
together successfully, but not always. It's easier just to replace it. John
Leimseider had some available back in September. If he doesn't respond to
your query on the mailing list, you could contact him directly at
john.leimseider@.... But try doing all the calibrations first.

Thanks You Paul !
I misunderstanding the Lower Function A 7 !
I thought it is referred only to left keyboard 2 lever !!
I'll let You know after procedure !

Re: [chromapolaris] Slider front panel not working properly

2013-01-04 by sukhoy27@yahoo.com

HI,
      i try to calibrate the sliders/Lever with Lower Function A7, A8, A9.
But he Polaris Sliders still works from 2/4 to 4/4 range.
For example, if i move the master slider  Volume from 4/4 to 3/4 the volume goes perfectly down, but when
slider master volume move from 2/4 to 1/4 volume quickly goes down.
This is for all the lever on panel.
The two lever ( Bender ) near keyboard seem to work good.

I have also problem to do this operation :

R45 on Main Board -- ADC Range
Lower Function D 4
LED in master section do not light up !
I try to turn the R45 Clockwise and counterclockwise but nothing seems to work .

I also do not understand how to proceed to adjust the " lever assembly " voltage that should be between 2,0 and 3,0 volt.

What is the  lever assembly ?
The adjust.doc manual means lever = Bender ?

Best regards.

If all the sliders on the panel operate only in the top half of the
mechanical range, then there may be something electrically broken on the
panel, and calibration won't fix it. Are you sure this is the case? For
instance, does the sweep rate control do nothing until it is at least half
way up? The same for filter cutoff? Envelope attack time?

It could be a bad A/D converter chip (Z53), or something in that circuit.

The lever assembly is the thing with the two levers to the left of the
keyboard. If they work properly, with the proper ranges, then you don't need
to do the lever assembly voltage adjustment.

Dear Paul,
I changed all the sliders on front a nel with original ,all of same KHom resistance.

The sweep rate control does do nothing , only increase the sweep level, but not sweep frequency .
Excuse me what do yu mean with " the case "  ?
ADSR Filter and volume works only after moving sliders control from 1/4 positions, but seems that do not reach maximum control. In fact the filter cutoff and resonance do not give me the Resonance effect .

I think to change the ADC converter Z53 .

Yesterday i was playing Polaris ,and after 1 Hours stop plains and I hear a strange digital noise when I move sliders.

Should it be the LM348 ??

Mamma Mia

Dear Paul ,
May you give me the exact Z53 chip code ?
Do you think it should be easy to find ?

In the input jack area I see a brown cable coming from the preamplifier board ( LM384 ) that it is unconnected , do you think it is this the reason that Polaris stop playing sounds ?

Thanks .

I'm not certain it's the problem, though. The first thing you should do is
to check all the power supply voltages. It's important to check them on the
power supply board, and also on the panel boards. Sometimes problems like
this are caused by a bad connection between boards. A cable can have a
broken wire in it, or a connector can have dirty contacts. So check all the
cables, unplug them and plug them in again several times to make sure the
connector contacts are clean.

The panel boards have lots of different power supply lines, including three
separate grounds and three +5V lines. You should measure ALL the supply
voltages relative to a single ground point. If you have a meter, connect the
common (black) lead to the ground lug sticking out of the middle of the main
board, and use the other (red) to measure ALL the supply voltages on the
right panel board. These include:

LED GND, DIG GND, ADC REF
LED +5V, +5V DIG, ADC REF
+12V ANA
-12V ANA

Yes, you should check the ground circuits, to make sure they are very close
to zero volts. A bad ground connection can cause problems. Without removing
the boards, you can measure the voltages at the connector pins.

That board is an output board, not a preamplifier board.

There is a brown wire that comes from the cable that plugs into J13, but
doesn't connect to anything at the other end. Originally it was a ground
wire to the output jacks, but it caused a ground loop so it was
disconnected. But the cables had already been manufactured, so the wire is
still there.

Dear Paul,
sorry for late snswer, and sorry because I lost Your reply message.
But I do what You suggested ,and You were right, it is not LM348 problems.

I try to check all Power Supply Volts.

1 ) I adjust the 5 Volt trim in Power Supply Board, because I measured 4,75 Volt  ( Set to 5,00 )

2 ) DC OK volt is easy to set, just turn the P.S. Trm andthe P.S led light .
I measured the Volt for the DC OK and it is 2,95 V .
If i try to turn the trim V2,95 remain the same.

3) I do all the adjustnente as requested , But Master Volume Led not turn ON ,

4) Isee the new Jack in the Phone/Hi/low Exit connected BAD.
as in the schematics I see The insulated Jack are bad connected ,in fact YELLOW cable goes to the Jack GND !!!!!
This mistake I think was made at Italy fender Repai centre " Casale Bauer " where They update the Firmware to REV  8.0
I try to fix this problem , and Polaris ,start to play again , but  MASTER volume Do not WORK .
Started to hear pushbuttons click at first, and magically after few minutes Polaris starts playing.
after few minutes Polaris Stop Playing. Mamma Mia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do You think it is Bad Jack Output Connections ?

As You see in these photos the jack were connected with GND in the Signal place !!!

5) I'm waiting to finish to test the GND in Polaris circuitry, I ask a friend HAM, expert in repairing HF radio ( DRAKE Collins, …) to better do the job.

Plese may you help me ?

Grazie
Mario

For some reason Google Docs won't let me view those images.

If the output jacks are wired improperly, that could make the audio output
not work, but it couldn't prevent the calibration from turning on the MASTER
LED.

I think this problem cannot be solved without directly examining the
instrument with a scope.

Thank You Paul for quick Answer .

I try to test as You suggest again all the Power Supply Voltages and especially the Grounds ,

I'm looking for the ADV 0804 just in  case ! I think to recalibrate the ZERO with the Microvolt meter again.

I never used a  scope  in my poor electronics experience .I'll ask how to, to my friend HAM radio.

Grazie !!!!
