Where to find 22 meg resistors?

Where to find 22 meg resistors?

2008-07-04 by acousmatique

Sorry to ask, as I usually don't have problems with sourcing parts, except a few odd things
lately. I am finally building my first few boards and on CGS48, the VCO, it calls for 22meg
resistors. I can't find any current suppliers in my searches. Only ones are big 1/2 and 2Watt
Allen Bradley units on eBay which are not cheap. Obviously, I'd rather not spend extra to get
these oversized AB resistors. I've done my usual web searches of Mouser, Digikey, Allied,
Futurelec... and I've searched the forum here, too. But depending on the engine short search
strings often yield bogus results. Ok, I'm rambling.

Anybody know where I can find some, preferably 1/4W 1%-5% for regular prices, in the
states?

Thanks - CJ

Failing all else, us two 10M and a 2M2 1/4W in series.

True, but I am running out of 10M and need 22M for other projects as well. I'll put two
resistors in series sometimes but if I need more than two, or need to do this all over a board
then I try to find a resistor of that value.

How crucial is it that they are 1% metal film? This is what have most of the resistors as so far.
I don't know if mixing comps causes issues with differences in temperature or if they'd be
negligable for our purposes. If I can measure 680r, 820r, and 240k from my stash of carbon
resistors then there are less which I need to find.

The primary issue is noise. Carbon resistors are noiser than metal film.
Also the higher the resistance, the greater the noise generated. That said,
with a value like 22M, you usally don't get a lot of choice. I'm using
carbon I think.

For values less than 1k, I don't go out of my way to find metal film.
Another thing to remember - vintage synths are usually full of carbon resistors!

While I haven't finished my coffee, it looks like Mouser stocks 1%
1/4W metal film (which do seem physically large) for about a $1
each, but there are even more choices for 22.1M metal film resistors,
like this one: 660-MF1/4DL2215F for .42. If you only need 5%, you
can get Xicon or KOA Speer 22M 1/4W carbon film for only 12 cents
each.

I don't know about Digikey, starting a month ago, I've asked them
three times to send me a catalog and it still hasn't shown up :\

Coffee! Thanks for those part numbers, as I was saying, my shorter search strings have
been turning up nonsense these days, especially on Mouser and Allied. I should've
remembered that the Mouser parametric search works better. Ah, the parts adventure... I
could enjoy coffee and waste hours looking for parts, I really get lost and silly.

Same thing had happened with me and Jameco. I've heard quite a few people swear by
them, but over the years they have never, *never* sent a catalog when I've asked them.
Before I was online that was my only way to order from them. So I've never bothered with
them. Maybe digi are between catalog printings?

I have gotten 20, 22.1 and just ordered some 22M 1% metal film
resistors from Mouser.

I had to search a bit but they had Koa Speer units, Vishay and IRC in
1/8, 1/4, 1/2 watt and in 0.1%, 1% 1nd 5%

The reason I am teling you all this detail is the price. The
difference between a 5% and a .1% can be a dollar, that is a lot.

The range in values is shrinking so I suggest people stock up, not for
CGS because our friend is mindful of parts availability and us and
cares but other designs will need odd bits

maybe im crazy, but i swear i remember just a few months ago that
mouser only had 22m R's that were like a buck a piece or something. i
just ordered last week and got 22m at their normal resistor rate-100
for $.02 a piece.

just my 2 cents. da dum crash.

Thanks for the disclaimer! I have been doubting my own sanity this weekend, so I relate.

That's what I've heard. Gino Wong was saying this a month or so ago. I waited a few weeks
to order mine, and then they only some for about $1ea. They listed 22M resistors as being
back in stock in a few weeks. The normal $.02 rate is for their Xicon resistors, but they
don't offer them in big resistance values. Only Dale and Speer, which tend to be more
expensive. Instead of buying the 22M ones for $1ea, I bought some 22.1M for $.25 each.
Still not as cheap as Xicon, but not enough to kill me. 100 pieces for $25 instead of 25
pieces. I went with their 10M resistors too. Part numbers were:

660-RK1/4DC2215F for 22.1 meg
660-RK1/4DC1005F for 10 meg
