damn I hate my bcr - it barely works. Any clues?

Hi,
When I try to use my BCR I have about a 1 in 3 chance of it actually
sending some midi, most likely it will fail to send anything at all.
It usually requires a hard restart of the BCR to get anything more out
of it, which again - will only last a minute or two.

I have the most up to date Behringer Midi driver and the BCR is
connected to my PC via USB.

A typical situation would be this:
1: I turn on the BCR
2: I open MidiOX and take a look at the incoming data while I turn a dial
the data is all fine
3: I wait ten seconds (or more) and try it again,
4: two out of three times this results in... nothing ! The controler
dies a silent death and nothing will coax a single bit out of it.

If I restart MidiOX, or 'release midi' and then open the BCR port
again it reports "BCR[1]: Unidentified External Error"

This is roughly the same issue I get when trying to use the unit with
a DAW. I use Ableton Live and in that case Ableton's midi page simply
displays the port name in red text, indicating deadness.

I was suprised to see no posts on this subject - so it must be only my
setup. I've tried a lot of things over the last 3 months of owning
this thing, including setting my USB power to 'never turn off' which I
read somewhere was a possible solution.

does anyone have any clues?
I just tried flashing the BIOS, although I'm reasonably sure it is up
to date. Of course, as the BIOS is updated via USB it fails horribly
halfway through and after giving me a spine chilling message about how
I have crippled my BCR the BCRUPDATE.exe freezes and must be terminated.

I'll be glad if anyone can solve this.
When the unit works it is fantastic, but when it doesn't, which is
most of the time, it makes me
want to hit it with a hammer.

TIA - Angstrom
