hey mike, can you be a nice guy (i'm sure you are!) and put my name 
on one of those chip sets as i've just bought an akai s1100 on ebay & 
don't yet know what the OS is.  if its --not-- 4.3 then i'll want the 
chips!

hopefully i'll be able to mount the 230mb optical drive inside the 
baby, instead of the floppy.  i was reading SoundOnsound from '97 and 
it mentioned that the s1100 has better MO support than the s1000 (i 
have a pb which'll soon be sold).  i lurve MO's as i've never had a 
failure, so hopefully theres an internal HD i can take the scsi 
wiring from.

right, back to fighting ikea over-charges...

Does anyone know the differences in functionality of EX1100 eprom 
versions 1.31 and 1.36 ?

And is it right, only S1100 OS version 2.02 works correctly w/ the 
EX1100 ???

Is the digital mainboard in the EX1100 absolutely identical compared to 
the one in the S1100 ?

I plan to replace a damaged mainboard in one of my S1100s by a mainboard 
out of an EX1100.

Does that work ?

I'm not sure about what versions work correctly with the
two machines, but I know for sure that the mainboards are
totally different. 

I've got both the S1100 and EX1100 and never got the two
talking to each other.

According to that site

you need the following versions:

Akai EX1100  1.36
Akai S1100   4.30 

"allows direct to hard disc recording"

Anything over v2.0 allows direct to disk recording on the
S1100 so that site is a little misleading. I have 4.30 on
the S1100 already, I'll see if I can burn a set of 1.36
EPROMS for the EX and give it a try. The problem with the
troubleshooting the EX is that it has no LCD so it's
impossible to see what version it's running or if it's
linking correctly to the S1100.
