checking ram

checking ram

2006-06-26 by jonnywahahaa

I have four 8 meg ram modules with my s-1000HD and they worked when i
bought the sampler,

but now i can only use 4meg of it in the o.s.

I tried moving the ram modules around in different orders, but without
success.

Can someone give me some insight in finding the bad ram module(s) and
setting up the good ones? Or could it be the ram slots?

thank you,
Michael

Did you try to test each of the 8 meg memoryboards separately in the same
( 1st ) slot to sort out any of the boards might be defective?
If the boards are o.k. and the slot 1 too, - you must read a message in the
S-1000s display "4 mega words fitted" w/ each of the boards in this slot.

If all the boards work in the 1st slot, so let one of the boards in slot 1
and try a 2nd one in the next ( 2nd) slot...
Now the display must show "8 mega words fitted"...
... and so on, - 12 mega words w/ 3 and 16 mega words w/ 4 of the 8 meg
boards.
If one of all the working boards ( tested in slot 1 ) fails in any other
slot, - this might be a / the faulty slot.

Check if the solderingpoints of the slot are o.k., - there are many...

For work w/ 4 8meg memoryboards, the address-bus of the S-1000 (HD) must
have been changed in the past by re-soldering 2 bridges on its mainboard, -
the big digital board on the bottom of the case.
See http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/smem/8Meg.html
"S-1000 jumpers"
If the, or one of the solderingpoints (or the wires) of these bridges are
broken p.ex., - the 32 meg of RAM cant be adressed anymore.

It can be a lot, - if you have a faulty digital-board, then theres no
chance for repair without a service manual, special equipment, - and
sometimes only a replacement-board will do the trick. You wont find any
b.t.w. !
Replacement parts for the S1xxx series are very rare and very hard to find.
Same w/ service manuals !
Schematics are senseless/uesless for measuring on this board, - you need the
servicemanual.
In this case its better to sell your damaged S-1000(HD), - maybe the
working parts of it, - and to buy another used machine.

But before you do this, check everything described above and IMPORTANT, - do
not swap or insert memoryboards in a running machine !!!!
Do all steps one-by-one, the sampler switched off and switch it on only for
reading the display, - then off again !!!

hope this will help a little...
