Theres nothing inside for HD addition in a regular S-1100.
Best is to use a external HD in a separate enclosure, -maybe 19" racked.
Youll get old Synthax, Kronauer or HybridArts solutions ready to use @ebay
for aprox. 50.- USD ...

Otherwise you have to install the HD on top of the S-1100s mainboard and to
find a solution for this.

No ! I use old Quantum, Seagate and Conner HDs successfully as also Syquest
44 and 88 MB removable media drives.
The HDs are 1 GB but formattet in 60MB partitions which results in 9
partitions ( the 9th is under 60MB then ).
So the ideal size would be 520 MB.
But if you use larger HDs and the sampler adresses 520 MB only, you avoid to
fill the HD completely which is an advantage for the HDs performance in
general.

Separate enclosures have fans, ID-selectors and their own PSUs which is a
big advantage as also to have them in a separate 19" shockmount-rack.

Akai samplers normaly have probs w/ heat anyway, especially the
memory-boards.
A HD inside may be o.k. in a studio, but if you move the S-1100 or use it on
the road in a rack, - avoid adding a HD inside the sampler as youll get
more heat by the HD itself and cause the internal PSU has to deliver more
power
