sounds like the whole LCD is bad. if the backlight is bad you can stiill read the LCD under a good light. it *could* be something much worse though. if I remember correctly, the s1000 boots up with test wave forms in memory. you should be able to get it to make some noise by letting it boot up, then pressing the sample key then the play key.(I'm not at home so I can't be sure I'm remembering correctly) or alternativly use the test menu as described in the service manual.
