Dear Richard Ramey,

Levnet is all about insults, lies and trash talking people that are not in the
clique of "precision" blowhard sycophants.

Peter Pringle and Charles Richard Lester think that stealling Final Cut Pro
software is an appropriate subject for posting at levnet. They banned me because

I disagreed - as well as them hating both my music and me.

If you like playing with psychopaths and trolls, keep posting at levnet.

You are now what I was to them - a target for abuse.

One thing I have learned from playing the theremin is that the instrument is a
better teacher and tool for learning than any of those blowhards, liars, trolls
and scumbags.

I had to come up with the word ThereminNAZIs to describe these clowns and
hypocrites.

How stupid does one have to be to hate someone becuase they don't like your
theremin playing?

Levnut Stupid.

How stupid does one have to be to hate someone becuase they don't like being
ripped off and insulted for complaining?

Levnut Stupid.

Try Aetherphone - I was posting there until one of the levnutters made a post
and then I stopped because I didn't want to deal with that trash talking crew.
The person who runs that forum is a decent human being - not like Levnet or
Thereminworld. As long as I don't post there anymore I am certain that they will
stay away.

Rupert Chappelle

PS - coincerning the CC list - DAVIDWEA and Steve Sherman can fill you in on
this because they are decent people - so is Olivia Mattis but she was unaware of
what was going on at the time and I included her because I feel she should know
hwat kind of people have taken over the forum. As for the rest on the CC list -
I wouldn't want to say anythingh behind their back without them knowing about
it.

Yes, but we don't seem to be as talkative. :-)

I admit, I'm guilty.....the way life has been lately, I haven't had time
to enjoy the chewy caramel center of theremin music other than Sunday
nights for about an hour before the program.....

Me, I'm slowly crawling out of the rafters and getting my feet on the
floor again. I decided I like what I'm doing and I'm not going to
change jobs in the foreseeable future. I got an A in my grad school
class over the summer, and I only have 3 to go until I graduate. The
kids have started school -- Eric starts 5th grade and Maggie starts 1st
grade. I'm tempted to reinstall my music software, but I need to get a
MIDI interface for my laptop. I have so much more I need to do, but
lately I seem to end up frittering all my time away on teh interwebs.

Musicwise....I have the ZenTherStick CD in my car and Contact Light by
Chris Conway in the bedroom.

So what have y'all been up to?

Re: What y'all up to? (was Re: [Aetherphon] told you so

2010-08-25 by rupert chappelle

Hi,

I probably should start posting here again since I think the bad ones prefer
their pit of shame and badmouthing other thereminists. The idea that someone
gets ripped off and then gets attacked for saying something about it sort of
grinds my gears - especially when the same people who banned me are involved
playing the same games that they played with me. I also rather like Pamelia
Kurstin and Shueh-li, both of whom have been trash talked by the same people who
banned me from Levnet.

Well, getting banned by them types did have a positive effect on my attitude and
playing. I decided to become the best theremin player ever - at least until
Pamelia, Lydia and Carolyn switch to the Model 302.

This summer I started using the ZOOM R-16 digital recorder and after noticing
the horrible noise that my dd-20 delay/looper was adding to the mix, I decided
to set it aside. All the playing with it had increased my skill far more than I
had thought possible so this is the result:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q72tCpzA-b8&feature=PlayList&p=EE47B27D7CAC12EF&index=0&playnext=1

Except for the last one, which pertains to the reason I got banned from levnet.

The reason I can play scales, arpeggios, riffs and everything else so easily and
accurately is due to the Model 302's plate antennas. Sorry to break this news to
everyone, but doing that with a pole antenna requires too much effort and
concentration which eludes all but the rare few and I like to play, not work and
strain when I do music.

Using a pole antenna to play notes is like using a screwdriver to hammer in a
nail. It IS an antenna, but that is not for broadcasting or receiving radio
signals. The antenna is actually a "plate" of a capacitor, with the earth being
the ground and a rod makes for a very lousy plate and an even worse sensor. I
guess they thought radio and ether required an antenna rather than a plate and
the crook and staff of the Pharoah was in vogue at the time, so very
symbolically male and female.

The standard antenna is cool looking, but awful for playing notes which WHY the
theremin is pretty much always associated with excessive vibrato, which is how
you hide the fact that it is difficult to hit and hold a note steady.

Due to the width and depth of the plate antenna, inadvertent hand motions do not
cause significant changes in pitch as is true of all pole antenna theremins.

So, if anyone wants to play theremin better than I, get a Model 302 and blow me
down! The wind on Twin Peaks already has proved that to be fairly easy to do.

I swear, it is as easy as walking or humming a tune. Using the angling technique
of play, you simply "pitch" your hand forward until you hit the right PITCH. Get
it? Your body works on angles, not distances and not fingering mudras and just
as easy as it is to put your foot on the right step on a staircase, so is it
just as easy to to play scales, intervals and arpeggios.

If you place your elbow on a steady surface, the notes stay where they should.
with the Etherwave I used a tripod to rest my elbow and with the Model 302, I
prefer playing seated and resting my elbow on my knee or on the arm of a chair.

Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who NEVER practices.

That grinds the gears of some people. They like the idea of it being difficult.

Playing the theremin should be fun, not work.

Happy Theremining!

Rupert

I'm slowly getting settled in in Auckland. Haven't made many in-roads to the scene here. I was just happier in Hollywood. I took my theremin to a Jazz club jam, only to get hated on by Jazzsnobs and called an "amateur music enthusiast" by the emcee. Perhaps those guys would oblige me by showing me the 20 feature films that have THEIR music on them. Usually, I don't brag about my accomplishments but my tolerance for snobbery has hit bottom.
Otherwise, I'm trying to get my backlog of albums released. It has been a long process.
I played theremin on Futureproof's versions of "Doot Doot" available on the Apple iTunes Music Store. It's not virtuostic by any stretch, but it is fun. There's a bit of lighthearted theremin on my various other soon-to-be released projects as well. Not lighthearted in some comedic way, but certainly not a Bach cello sonata either.
And I continue work on my stop-motion animated video for "The Funhouse Waltz," my work for Theremin, Strings, Organ and Percussion. The trailer is still up on YouTube. If you haven't seen it, it's here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzmWBeMIvNE
Sorry to hear about other peoples bad experiences with internet trolls, flamers and generally bad sorts. It happens. The best thing is to get away from those guys.
Peace
Carvin

Hello everyone!

This year I have focused on DIY synthesizer building. Specifically,
I've moved from kit-building to DIY -- that is, sourcing my own parts
and designing, drilling, and labeling my own panels. I added another
cabinet of modules to my 1970's era Aries synthesizer -- I designed
the new modules to preserve, as much as possible, the "look" of the
Aries:

http://kevinkissinger.com/ariesinfo.shtml

... at the top is a picture and when you scroll down you will see a
spec list that notes the new modules built in 2010.

I have wanted to compose some more theremin-music, but haven't gotten
around to it -- the lure of building has been too much of a temptation!

I still intend to finish a composition in time for the 2010
electro-music festival however, as luck would have it, my schedule has
become absolutely crammed and, quite unexpectedly, I've had to spend a
few days out-of-town for business meetings.

Anyway, that pretty much sums up my year as far as the theremin goes.

Hi Carvin

I'm fairly new to the list and my partner is making me a kitset theramin I do live in Auckland though and have been here for 14 or so years. If anything comes up in the music scene that might be of interest to you as a theramin player I would be happy to let you know about it.
I would love to hear you play at a public performance!

regards

Thanks Robyn!
You missed my Oud performances over the weekend at the Limmud festival. Most of my Theremin performances have been at club gigs in L.A. with a DJ. Haven't met many DJs here.

Hi Carvin

I'm fairly new to the list and my partner is making me a kitset theramin I do live in Auckland though and have been here for 14 or so years. If anything comes up in the music scene that might be of interest to you as a theramin player I would be happy to let you know about it.
I would love to hear you play at a public performance!

Robyn Sutherland

What y'all up to? (was Re: [Aetherphon] told you so

2010-08-26 by RickReid

Hello, Group!

In May I recorded an extended, "live" electronic music improvisational jam session along with an acoustic drummer. I edited down to album length and self-released it on-line as "Boulder Suite: Improvisations for Theremin, Drums & Devices." There are links to sample tracks on my website: http://www.rickreidtheremin.com.

Over the summer I've rapidly improved my ability to play proper melodies on my Moog Etherwave. I've also added several items to my instrument collection: a Korg Monotron, a Gakken Pro Theremin, an additional Alesis Air Synth, and coming very soon - a Burns B3 Pro Theremin.

I've recently seen two live gigs by Denver indie rock band "The Inactivists," featuring thereminist Victoria Lundy. I may go to a DeVotchka concert this weekend.

In October, I will once again be playing live sound effects cues with my electronic instruments for a Denver-area community theater production of "The Rocky Horror Show." I also plan to use my theremins to create recorded sound cues for a community theater production of "Bang, Bang Your Dead."

Meanwhile, I continue to write and produce nearly half of the episodes of the "Starz Studios" movie news show for the Starz television networks and work on my part-time career as a professional voice actor.

That's my story for now.

Thanks JS,
You accidentally sent this to me privately, so that when I went to reply, it was only addressed to your private box.
Actually, I don't want to get involved in your fight with Rupert. It ain't my business. But still....it doesn't seem a little "trollish" to send this message to me privately and not include your name? Pursuing me because of his rant, and my message of sympathy, including the suggestion that he just put the other groups behind him seems a little...I don't know...psycho perhaps?
You might wish to re-think your way of dealing with people.
Peace
C

Carvin,

In fact, we have. If you can't tell from his
posting, Rupert got *himself* banned from Levnet and Theremin World. No
one did it *to* him.

Rupert sent his rant to many of us in private
emails. The issue was not about him. The issue is not as he describes
it. And, it's basically none of his concern.

Rupert IS the troll.
Rupert IS the flamer.
Rupert IS the psychopath.

Rupert just doesn't "get it".

Greetings Fellow Hand Wavers
I don't post much, but felt I should send a few words from across the pond -
that's the UK where I live :)

Working full time restricts how much time I'm albe to spend making noiziz
usually to weekends (when there are no other committments), but I enjoy
playing the theremin - it's good fun. I call it my note strangling and have
on the odd occasion been asked if I'm torturing a cat.

I've taken it to several events and it always has people fascinated.

Locally once a month there's an improv evening called "The Noise Upstairs"
where you put your name into a hat and groups of 3 are drawn out to jam
together. The results are of course mixed, but can at times be quite good if
participants give each other space and listen to what others are doing. I've
played along to various instruments such as guitars, a cello, french horn,
sax, even laptops and of course synthis. Some of the regulars can really
generate some nice sound textures and most are professional musicians in
their own right or music teachers, but there's no snobbery and the
atmosphere is always pleasant even if one or two get carried away at times -
fun - They've also run workshops for circuit bending and building your own
instruments as well as organising an improv event bsaed on something called
Cobra by John Zorn. I'd never heard of it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/rf63

I wouldn't call myself a musician, but like to experiment with various
pieces of kit.
All the best
Paul

p.s.

I love people discussing stuff (the list has been a little light lately)
and so I don't wish to discourage that, but be mindful that this list is
not Levnet and I don't wish to deal with Levnet's disputes. Let what
happens in Vegas, stay in Vegas. :-)

Dude, you've been holding out on me. :-) I've got, like, one song of
yours. Is it mostly because your other performances are work for hire?
I know it can be a tangled mess, what with recording rights and song
rights and the grabbing hands grab all they can.

Yes, that is Art Harrison's work.

http://harrisoninstruments.com/302/302_description.html

I was real sketchy about the plate antennas and the inverse volume mapping at
first, but I knew that Harrison's instruments produced amazing bass sounds and
the "putt putt" of the Etherwave in the bass range cramped my style so I bought
one.

After the first week I could play it and after two weeks I could play it better
than the Etherwave. After the third week I had to replace the battery. I had
played the Model 302 more in three weeks than I had played my Etherwave in the
last three months. It was just that much fun. BTW - the 9 volt battery lasts for
over 24 hours of play.

I found that I could also play it backwards and I could put the volume antenna
at a 90 degree angle and play the volume antenna from underneath to enable play
like a standard Etherwave, but those ergonomics are just wrong. One hand going
one way and the other hand going the other way just makes things difficult. With
both hands operating in the same direction, the same model of play can be used
by the cerebellum. Could anyone imagine walking with one leg going back and
forth and the other one going left to right?

Peter Pringle has likened playing the Theremin to walking a tightrope. No
wonder! Just look at the pole antenna. Could you walk along that? Whereas the
plate is like walking a sidewalk. You are not as likely to take a spill and if
you do, it is only a couple of cents off rather than a semitone or more.

The whole notion that the theremin has antennas rather than capacitor plates is
why the instrument has had such a difficult go of it - it is easy to play, buty
hitting notes and holding them, not so much - because an antenna is the wrong
tool.

Rupert

I'm not familiar with the Model 302. Is that one of Art's designs?

Feeleep,

Good to hear from you and please post here - the negatives are elsewhere.

You have built a wonderful instrument and I am sure we would all like to hear
more of it.

I don't post much anywhere anymore. Don't need the negative energy. I play for

Hi Rupert,
that 302 theremin sounds like fun. I had a look last night and it's a neat
little box
of trix. I like the idea of playing it from underneath and found the demo
sounds
interesting. It's a pity they take so much for shipping outside the US
(plus of course customs duties).

I was fortunate to get me E-Pro (lefty) for a good price. The first theremin
I ever
tried was Pamelia's when she visited the UK a while back and the first notes
I
ever strangled were the intro to Katherine Howard from the Six Wives of
Henrly
VIII by Rick Wakeman. Pamelia was so kind to say that it sounded nice, as I
did struggle, but it was after all my first ever attempt at shoo-ing
invisible wasps:)

I'd love to have a go on a 302. I wonder if there are any in the UK?

Nice to see some activity here. I'm really not into the whole "my
antenna is bigger than yours" crap. Although ThereminWorld is usually
not so bad.

I've been unable to play for several weeks due to tendonitis
(actually, it's "tenosynovitus", an inflammation of the tendon
sheaths) in my right hand. It's painful to bend my wrist, which makes
playing the theremin problematic. I find out next week about getting
surgery. I'm going to be *so* out of practice!

But I am featured on a new recording by the band Pandemonaeon, from
their new album "Dangerous Beauty". The track, "The Tower" is here:

http://pandemonaeon.bandcamp.com/track/the-tower

I was performing live with the goth-industrial group Protea (I've
missed the last few gigs due to my hand condition). The MySpace page
is here:

http://www.myspace.com/proteamusic

I play a Burns B3 Deluxe, with overdrive, phaser, delay and
"dimension c" chorus (all analog pedals) and drive it through an ART
V2 tube pre-amp. Analog rules!

Re: [Aetherphon] Re: What y'all up to?

2010-08-26 by rupert chappelle

I have a crippled right wrist which is in constant pain. Most of my play is from
the elbow. if you see how I hold my right wrist, it is because It hurts like
bloody hell to twist it. My right hand is vertical and my left horizontal.

You can play pole antenna theremins using the angling technique with a side ways
sweep and using a tripod to rest the elbow will help steady the arm and hand for
more accurate play. If you are using "aerial fingering", you are out of luck. I
think that technique is a good way to cause wrist and hand problems.

Keep in mind that sometimes an antenna is just an antenna.

Rupert
