of course, a newbie question

i generally know what i'm doing with synth modules but i thought i 
would follow the manual just this once :-)

so i patched up the patch on page 2, using MOTM modules for modulator 
and the EGs, and a Wilson VCA taking care of the output.

seems to work all right, but i'm not getting any FM via the index CV 
input, even with the knob cranked. i know the EG is working all right 
because i get wild pitch modulation if i stick it into the exp CV or 
1v/oct CV inputs.

is there something i could be doing wrong here?

Hi Jason!

Ok, start by listening to the Triangle wave output jack of the ZO.

Flip all the switches into the up position, and Morph in the center.

Tune the ten-turn knob somewhere in the center of it's range.

Turn the "Index CV" knob in the lower left all the way up and
plug your envelope generator's output into the Index "CV" jack.

Set the envelope for fast Attack, high Decay & Systain levels,
and set for a longish Decay at about 3:00 on the knob's rotation.

After patching an audio frequency sine wave from your  MOTM
VCO output... into the ZO's "Dynamic 2"  or "AC" Coupled
Dynamic FM Input Jack, you then should find that firing the
envelope generator while playing with the frequency knob of the
MOTM VCO creates some incredibly rich tones out of the ZO!

After achiving this patch, ~then~ go on to add the VCA into the
audio path to "gate" or control the audio output between envelope
firings...

Also, try patching the MOTM VCO into the ~DC~ coupled
dynamic FM input Jack instead of the ~AC~ one, and listen for
the differences.  (They seem really subtle at first, until you
realize that the typical DC input is nowhere nearly as ~musical~
as the result of using the AC coupled Dynamic input instead).
Once known, this difference is huge.

Keep everything the same and just swap the output from
the ZO'a Triangle to one of the Sawtooth outs, quite a
difference in timbre eh?  (take ~that~ DX-7s!  :)

Hope this all makes sense, I can do it in my sleep now,
(in fact I worry now that maybe I do do this in my sleep now)...

hey

thanks for the detailed help.

my mistake - i was plugging the MOTM sine into the linear FM jack, 
not the AC coupled dynamic 2 jack. after i corrected that, the 
envelope started to work as expected.

and the thing sounds AMAZING now, too.
