Please scan the Electronic Musician issue cant get it here

Hey folks,
I will ask EM’s IT folks to put it up as a PDF, so you can see the photos and layout as intended. I think the article was scheduled to go online in a couple of weeks, but I’ll see if I can expedite that.
Best regards,
Gino Robair

Hi Gino
EM should have a system where you can buy an article like Sound On Sound
UK do....that is brilliant for me because I usually get their mags at
least 2 months later, so just buying the article I want on same day is a
brilliant idea...I dont feel so isolated then...and I have to get my
modular fix :-)

I interpreted Gino's intent was to draw mass attention to this
cottage industry and to highlight the diversity of available brands
rather than to enlighten those of us who are already fanatics. I
don't believe the typical EM reader needs patch cords to enable
their own "electronic" music, but hopefully a few of them will
venture into our world as a result of Gino's evangelism.

Best wishes,

Chris

I'm not trying to rain on Cynthia's parade (the ZO looks to be
a MAJOR milestone), and all your enthusiasm to read this - but...
personally I was dissappointed in the article. Coverage of
various vendors and formats was spotty. The info was pretty basic.
And I didn't think it had much to say beyond what one could get

Re: [The_Cyndustries_List] Re: Please scan the Electronic Musician issue cant get it here

2006-06-14 by Robair, Gino

(Thanks for the comment Chris: you’re right about the audience I was writing this for).

Hi Greg,
Sorry you found the article blasé. It was actually meant for the reader who is unfamiliar to analog modulars, and who may not know the names of the recent companies venturing into this field. I also wanted to highlight what the different formats are, comment a bit about what makes each so interesting to its users, talk about the sound of as many modules as I could, etc. It wasn’t meant to preach to the converted, so to speak.

And the main point is that it wasn’t meant to cover EVERY manufacturer: just the ones that came about since my last article on the subject in 2001, as well as the companies that have new lines in new formats (MOTM, Wiard, etc). (The 2001 article is online already, and talks about the veteran companies.) So, with that in mind, I don’t think my coverage was spotty at all, if I do say so myself. If I missed a company that fits this criteria, I’d like to know who it is so I can tell EM’s readers! :-)

BTW, I introduced one new company that few aficionados even knew about̵2; Magic Smoke Electronics — who are just getting their feet wet with a new filter that sounds pretty damn sweet (based on the prototype I tried).

Also, you mentioned:
<>

I described the sound and operation of as many of the modules I was able to get my hands on, in the number of pages I was given. The others, I had to rely on friends who have the gear and, yes, only a couple of times I had to rely on what their press releases said. But I did that very little and to be as inclusive as possible. Again, the number of pages/words I was allocated simply were not enough to evaluate everything there is in this market. (FWIW, the article was originally twice as long as was printed, so I had to cut it way down. In fact, it would’ve been a few pages shorter if it weren’t elevated to cover story status. Try cutting 7 pages of material! Very painful...).

The toughest part, since you asked :-)
...was getting my hands on modules from various manufacturers. Because all of these companies sell the modules as quickly as they’re built, I had to scramble to hear and use many of them. Thank goodness there was a NAMM show and Musikmesse to help me get some time on the more obscure instruments (or prototypes in some cases). In other cases, I had already purchased the modules I was writing about (often at full or nearly full cost), so I was already familiar with what they did (as in the Plan B and Livewire stuff).

The biggest exception was Cynthia, who shipped the system you see on the cover up to Emeryville for me to examine for the article. She sent THREE Zeroscillators to check out, plus some other modules from her line and Modcan A-series. It was a lovely set up to look at, but you can’t even imagine how great this system could sound and how much fun it was to work with.

So, pretend you’re an art director for a gear magazine, and you visit your media lab to find an instrument to photograph for the cover. Which one would you pick? Although my A-100P was there and full to the brim, there was something visually arresting about the ZO all patched up in that rack. Maybe if other manufacturers had shipped nice-looking systems to me, the competition would’ve been more fierce. But on the day they had to pick an instrument, the Cyndustries system was looking mighty fine and won hands down.

Lastly, let me make clear that I am in no way insulted by your comments, Greg. I was expecting someone, on one of the analog lists, to say the kinds of things you said. And you’re right in certain ways: the article was basic, and it didn’t include all the vendors. I would love to have covered all the great new stuff from Blacet, AS, AS, Doepfer, MOTM 1/4-inch, and Modcan A-series. AND I would love to spend enough time on each system to get a feel for each one’s sound and personality. But I had to limit the approach so we could run reviews, application stories, columns, etc.

In all due respect to all the modular makers, this is a niche market (as they already know all too well). So the fact that my editor in chief put this story on the cover still knocks me out. We didn’t do this to pander to advertisers: it was done for the right reasons. We wanted to tell our readers that there are alternatives when it comes to electronic instruments, and that these alternatives are affordable and sound great. Hopefully we got that point across to a few of them. :-)

And yes, the ZO system was returned to Cyndustries. As is all the hardware we review (unless one of us purchases it). Unfortunately, I spend more time writing in this job than I do working with the gear that comes through. However, tonight I’m off to media lab to work on a review of a new filter module that recently came in. Hint: it has a tube in it.

Best regards, y’all.
