Eurorack ZO: the good & the less good (hands-on user experience)

Eurorack ZO: the good & the less good (hands-on user experience)

2006-04-01 by levka0

Hi all,
I picked up my Eurorack ZO today from the post office.
When trying to mount it in my Doepfer G6 rack, the following issues
occured.

1) The 10p power connector does not fit on a standard doepfer bus.
I do have some extra 10-16p cables at hand, but the lay-out on the ZO
PCB confused me somewhat regarding the actual pin placement of the
grounding. So I decided not to gamble on this.

2) The ZO module that I received is indeed too deep for a standard
Doepfer G6 rack.
Luckily, this can easily be overcome by loosening the screws on the
side of the case which retain the alu strip on which the upper bus
boards are placed. Rotate everything 90 degrees, and fasten the screws
again, so that the bus board connctors now face upward instead of
forward. This creates an inch of extra space in the upper row of the
case that is adequate.

3) However, I was not able to mount the ZO module flush with the front
of the Doepfer G6 rack, as the first ZO PCB board is fixed too low on
the faceplate so that faceplate cannot be seated onto the lower
mountig rail. The PCB sticks out 2-3 mm too much to the lower side.

I am very interested in other experiences and possible solutions.

Best regards from Amsterdam,
Joost

Hi Cynthia,

Many thanks for your rapid response; much appreciated !

Especially good to read about the solution for the front panel issue;
I was mostly worried about this,
but I should be able to replace one myself.

Keep up the good work, best regards
Joost

Hi Joost!

We designed a right angle PC Board adapter to shorten the overall depth
of the
Euro ZO (also good for the Dotcom ~portable~ cabinets) and these new
circuit boards
arrived and we are busy soldering all of the 96-pin connectors onto them
right now.
They work great!

We also now provide 16-pin Doepfer Power Cables along with a Doepfer-to-AS
Power Cable Adapter with each Euro Zeroscillator.

The circuit boards right behind the front panel are now a lot narrower
in their
top-to-bottom height so as to allow flush mounting of the panel to the rack.

We're working this weekend on how best to service the units in the field as
most likely we will send out new front panels with instructions on how
to easily
swap them. Fortunately these are all simple fixes that do not affect
the electronics
or calibrations, so it will be easy.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Re: Eurorack ZO Solutions

I guess my personal irony is I have an Analogue Solutions case that ought to be able to
accept just about anything Eurorack, even with abnormal screw spacing... but instead ordered
a Blacet.

What's the power consumption in mA? Now I'm worried I'm underpowered.

Anyway I'm short of money so it's okay I didn't get an unwieldy early issue eurorack.

the power consumption is 150 ma positive and 100 ma negative.
just calculate with 150 ma.

best wishes

Ouch looks like I'm going to need another power supply I can't afford.

Maybe I should try to change my order.

Idea: Order two ZO's. That will justify your investment in a new power
supply. :)

(My ZO is not yet up on my website. It will be.)

more likely option to happen: sell my modules
