Re: [The_Cyndustries_List] Nam June Paik

Thanks for the news, and the article. It brought back memories. I met
Nam June Paik in the 70's when I worked at the ETC. He was highly
regarded as the "father" of video art.

Check out the site and look at the history.

At the time I was thinking about applying to a music school in Boston to
study the electric bass and become a professional bassist (I was already
playing gigs with bands). I mentioned this to Nam June one day and he
cautioned against it. His idea was that formal school would ruin your
creativity. "Might come out worse than went in," he told me, as I
recall. I don't know how much this influenced me, but I didn't to to
that school and never became a full-time professional bassist.

We did not have a Rutt-Etra video synthesizer in the ETC studio, due to
its cost, but we knew people who did have them or had access to them.
The ETC had a couple of Paik-Abe colorizers. As mentioned in the
article, the Paik-Abe was limited. One of those limitations was a lack
of voltage control. (Another was that video went directly through pots
on the panel, which I had the job of changing once a year.) Some of the
projects I worked on at the ETC with the engineer David Jones included
voltage controlled video VCA's, switches and keyers. The control
voltages were standard +/-5V, so that you could use audio synthesizers
(such as Aries or Serge) to control the video.
