hard sync...

hard sync...

2002-01-25 by jamescoplin

i couldn't find this in the egres wizardry site or on the list so i
thought i'd post it in case someone wasn't aware of how to generate
hard sync of a sort on the serge. as an aside, am i the only person
who doesn't see any sense in soft sync?

anyhow, this requires a cv mixer, nto, and a dsg. set the nto to your
desired master frequency. set the variable wave form to a square and
patch the square output into the cv mixer. next patch the gate out on
the dsg into the cv mixer. take the cv mixer out into the trigger on
the dsg. set the rise and fall times on the dsg low. the square
output from the nto will restart the dsg and give a hard sync sound.
apply a little envelope or lfo etc to the rise/fall cv in control if
you want to modulate the sync timbre (and don't we all) and you have
it. just mix the dsg output into the audio chain with the nto output
and go.

this sync only works in the upper range of the dsg. it's really
bright and ringy but works well enough and has an aggresive uneven
quality about it i kind of like. i tried squaring up other audio
signal to use instead of the nto but i couldn't seem to get anything
square enough to retrigger the dsg except the square wave output.
inverting the saw to achieve a rising edge for the dsg didn't seem to
work either. hope this helps someone.
