The Serge Musician's Tapes 2002

The Serge Musician's Tapes 2002

2001-11-30 by m. blake wilson

this is the formal announcement that the members of the Serge Modular Owner's
Group (SMOG, located at Yahoo! Groups at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular)
are compiling and producing a new CD of music and sounds produced using
the Serge Modular Music Synthesizer. This project is inspired by the coming rerelease
of the original Serge Musician's Tapes, produced by Serge Modular in the early 80's,
featuring both amateur and professional artists utilizing the Serge Modular Music
Synthesizer. The original cassette tapes will be transferred to compact disc and available
to SMOG members. The 2002 version of this project will be available to the general public.

The Serge Modular Music Synthesizer was created by Serge Tcherepnin in the early 1970s in
California and has been in continuous production since that time, making Serge the longest
running analog modular synthesizer firm in the world. Currently, over 65 modules
are available, with production and distribution supervised by Rex Probe of Sound Transform Systems.
Comprehensive information on modules and their use is available at http://www.scampers.com/EGRES/
A truly fascinating historical survey is available at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/files/SMMSLINK.htm.
This link includes several document relevant to analog modular synthesis in general.
The discussion group at SMOG also features information, pictures, and a small selection of Serge sound files.

Further details will be posted to the SMOG site. In the meantime, please consider submitting
your work featuring the Serge in either a solo or prominent role with production and patching notes
to:

Blake Wilson, Odyssey Sounds

CD, MD, or cassette tape only. If necessary, mp3 or *brief* .aiff submissions may be considered and sent to:

All artists will retain full publishing rights to their work product. A mechanical license will be granted by all artists
to OdysseySounds for the purpose of this project.

This is a nonprofit endeavor. Both the 2002 and the rerelease will appear Spring, 2002. Thanks!

This is an excellent idea. I have a copy of the original tapes. I
thought much of what was on them was a bit silly; but from a
pedagogical standpoint, quite useful.

I have a general question on the issue of "purity" of Serge-ness.
We sometimes make patches, let them run, record them.
Sometimes we use the sounds in compositions or installations,
in some cases with other sound sources. Sometimes we "play"
the Serge as we are recording. Sometimes we let some external
sequencer do that for us, eg. Max sending MIDI->CV messages,
with the performer playing Max. Sometimes we through- or
post-process pretty pure Serge patches, or layers of them, with
analog (eg. delicious filters), early digital magic (eg. MXR
transposer, oneof my favorite toys), or with computer or outboard
post-production tools (some modernish Lexicon, Protools
plugin, or CM instrument).

For the purpose of the proposed CD, what limit of pure
Serge-ness are we suggesting? I, for instance, have heavily
layered complex Serge patches, through- and post-processed,
but still distinctly Serge-sounding (to my ear). And a student of
mine (also now a collaborator) has a pure Serge patch being
controlled by Max, which he subtly plays. Very Serge-y.

What do you think a propos of the sampler CD? Thanks...
