The 2001 Serge vs. Modcan Southern California Shootout!

2001-07-30 by Matt Wilson

last week i hinted that i was finally going to get my hands on Modcan
gear. yesterday,
Jason Maston from the Analog Heaven list and i got together with my
serge and his
brand spankin' new modcan setup. he's got their system package 1, along
with the addition of
a processor module and a jack converter module.

we had a great time; i'll be posting the results with our impressions
tonight. stay tuned!

Quite an extraordinary turnaround if I may say so.
Your hands on experiences mirror my own. At first you think the ModCan is a
cheap alternative to a Serge panel but there is probably only a couple of
hundred dollars in it. At the end of the day I think Serge remains cream of
the banana crop. ModCan offers very quick delivery, purchase of single
modules and (not to be ignored) several alternative modules that can add
greatly to a Serge set up.
The VCA is incredibly powerful BTW although I'm not sure if that is such a
good thing. I've had to attenuate it down using a mic-pre just to get it
into my desk without extreme overload.
