Serge Format Zeroscillators

Serge Format Zeroscillators

2011-03-30 by cyndustries

Helloooooo to the land of Serge!

The award winning through-zero FM
Zeroscillator has been realized in many
different formats including Euro, Frac,
Motm, Synthesizer.com/Moog, Modcan,
Rack-Mount, Blue Wiard, and Buchla...

Who would be interested in a Serge
version, and should we make a big dual
ZO panel, or one of the new half size
panels?

Now that we have the Buchla and
Wiard units shipping we are planning ahead...
Anyone interested?

Please contact us directly, thanks!

Good luck fitting one of those into a 2.5'' chasis.

True!

This would be a great project to go surface mount.

Depending on which size panel, and the layout,
there might be room for a Sawtooth Animator in too.

Some sort of dual zo/saw animator in it's own chasis may be the simplest way to go.

Re: Serge Format Zeroscillators

2011-03-30 by cyndustries

is there still any interest in full size panels in the Serge Community?

Are M-Modues popular? If offered, would more people like to continue
with the full size panels - as long as they fit in the shallower boats?

If designed carefully, we could make a circuit board with all of the jacks,
knobs, and switches so that it could be installed into an M-module alone,
or two of the boards could be installed into a larger panel for a dual.

If this were the case, it might make more sense to make an M-module
with only a single Zeroscillator, but to add a full featured Sawtooth Animator
with all of the LFO outputs, as well as a Low Pass Gate/Mixer circuit.

So as an M-Module
it would be: ZO, SAW ANIMATOR, and LPG/MIX

and/or

as a full panel: dual ZO, dual SAW ANIMATOR, and dual LPG/MIX

Would the LPG be a good thing to include? Anything else?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I would recommend building ZOs as M-Class. Adding those extra modules would be really cool. Having a dual ZO would be awesome but if you check Quadslope.com/foum I think you'll see that most people have M-Class based systems these days or at least a mix of some M-Class with their shop panels.

Thank You! That is very important information!

So far I'm thinking of doing a panel that could be
used as, "a single" using one pair of circuit boards
to make an M-class module...

or as, "a double" with two of these circuit board pairs
to fit a full-width Serge panel.

That way we could please both crowds.

There would be a small bonus area on the full size
panel as some other circuit would need to occupy the
space, row or Septum that the M class power supply
stripe panel create.

Does anyone here have hands-on experience with the ZO? While the idea
sounds interesting, none of the demos have done anything for me.

hi John,

yep, i have been using one (sometimes two) since 2006. it is one of my favorite oscillators!
really special linear fm sounds!

i would be interested in a Serge format ZO (in M-class format), if i can afford it at the time of course...

best regards,
Bakis.

Re: Serge Format Zeroscillators

I Agree with you John, the sound samples are pretty tame.

We did those samples several years ago and we too have learned much
about how to use the mighty Zeroscillators ourselves in the meantime :)

One of the best features of the Zeroscillator when doing its FM thing
is that it sounds like a ~real~ big sheet of metal being beaten and ringing,
or chimes, or woodblocks, or bells...

Almost as an afterthought in the design, I added the Through-Zero on/off
Switch and boy am I glad that I did, because there are hundreds of times when
listening to a patch one might say, "ok, what would this patch sound like if
I didn't use a through-zero oscillator?", and after flipping the switch...
you cannot help but crack a big smile and say, "wow, I'm glad I got this!"
because there is a big difference.

When realizing analog linear FM patches without through-zero technology
they tend to have a pitch shift on each note and a klangorous or cartoony
special-effectsy type sound, (think of Isao Tomita's "Golliwogs Cakewalk"
which I feel is delightful for one piece on the album, but if all of the notes
were that goofy all the time, then the ear would rapidly tire of it).
Not so with the ZO, and we haven't even discussed the vocal qualities of
modulating the Time Reversal input, etc.

The difference is that with the Through-Zero Switch on, that characterization
of a sound, becomes more sonically pure, (meaning a cleaner overall mix
of your piece) and the notes are more musical, and sound more realistic by far.

Someday I must do a demonstration video on this.

There are plenty of things that the Zeroscillator brings to the Serge table,
plus Sawtooth Animators and Low Pass Gates!

BTW, with the Sawtooth Animator you can patch an LFO output back into the
VCO, PCO, or NTO that is modulating it and create an interesting feedback loop.
The patch sort of works its way up to a tizzy and the stabilizes. When you pull
that patch cord making the loop, the whole thing goes through all of the wild
gyrations winding back down and that would be lots of fun to interact those loops
into submodule circuit sections of the Serge.

There are close to (500) Zeroscillators out there in (33) countries, there is definitely
something cool and different about using them, I think you definitely might enjoy one too!

Here are some sources of more sound sample which may be helpful

Peter Marshall just sent these sound samples in
as a better example of the Musicality inherent in
the through-Zero Zeroscillator doing linear FM.

Of course if you want ultra-super Klangy...
just flip the Switch!
