Replacement banana jacks?

Replacement banana jacks?

2010-06-12 by Mattias Rickardsson

Hi,

I'm restoring a Serge system from 1984 with some broken jacks, and I
need to find good replacements. What make and model should I consider?

I've seen people mention Johnson, but the new Johnson jack I just got
differs a little bit from both the old Serge and the M-class panels,
judging from photos I've seen. For example the inner metal part is a
little "square-ish" in the hole instead of circular, and the metal part
also has a little simpler and cheaper look. One of these "corners" of
the "square" can be seen here:

and here:

Despite this, it has been claimed by wizards on the sdiy list to be the
jack that Serge and Buchla probably uses nowadays. It seems to me like
Buchla 200e uses them,

but not Serge:

Is there any consensus about what jacks one should buy as replacements? :-)

The difference you might be seeing is the difference between a
machined jack and a spring steel jack. Emerson makes both kinds,
though not in very many colors. Pomona make machined jacks as well,
but they're pretty deep. The 1970s Serge panels used Emerson/Johnson
jacks with press-on star "nuts" holding them on.

I like the insertion / removal force when patching with machined
jacks, but the cost, color selection and depth are prohibitive.
