Serge/Buchla compatibilty

Serge/Buchla compatibilty

2009-10-02 by dr.jasoncrest

Does anyone have any experience using Buchla & Serge interactively? I've been considering a 200e but was wondering if I'd be able to control it with my TKB and send control voltages from the Serge and vice versa.

Thanks!
Jason

I'd be interested in learning more about this as well would there need to be any re-calibration between the touchplates of the TKB and the CV inputs on the 200e?

For the Wigglers amongst us, there was a thread on Muff about this recently. Hope that helps.

..and the link to that thread is here:

Bottom line: yes it can be done but, at least for me, the workflow didn't work for me.

Re: Serge/Buchla compatibilty

I have two custom Serge panels and a panel of Buchla 200e. I am about to set up a small rack with one Serge and one Buchla panel with a thin strip of attenuators and 1/8-> banana converters.

My initial experiments with using these two together has been quite rewarding and the cross pollination of Serge and Buchla is amazing...to me. Running Serge audio into Lowpass Gates and Buchla 261e osc into Serge filters sounds tres' cool.

As I have mentioned, the thing you need to be most aware of is Buchla CV's are not bipolar...they go from 0 to +10v so you need to keep this in mind as negative going CV just does nothing (say a S/H that is centered around 0v going +/- etc.

Its worth noting that I never do anything that is tonal/tuned so if that is your intention your results may vary. Using a TKB with the Buchla should work just fine as it goes 0 to +10 yes? (Don't recall). The only other thing is Buchla Envelopes need +10 triggers...and using a 281 with the Serge is also wonderful....they are snappy and the retrigger capability is much different than using a Dual Trans/DSUG as an envelope.

Hope this info is helpful...

TKB output voltage is from 0 volts to +5 volts.

Thank you so much. It sounds like we're taking similar approaches musically and I find your results to be encouraging. Where did you get the thin strip for 1/8 to banana? What are the attenuators doing?
Also, what Buchla modules did you get? I'm not sure I can afford to go for a 200e system so I'm thinking about what combination of modules would work for me.

Best,
Jason
