powering Serge on +/- 15v

powering Serge on +/- 15v

2009-07-20 by deadcustomers

specifically, I've got a Dual Phaser and a VCFS that I'd like to put into a panel with some +/- 15v gear and I'm wondering what issues I'd run into if I powered those Serge modules that way.

The datasheets on all the IC's all seem to be rated for at least +/- 15v, although there is one IC on the VCFS that I haven't been able to identify because it's sandwiched between two small PCB's.

I'd guess that the v/oct tracking on the VCFS wouldn't scale normally, but I don't think I care about that. So what other issues am I looking at?

thanks!

I can see no reason why it would be an issue. I run some Serge stuff on 15
volts anyway. That sandwiched chip is just a common dual up-amp. LF353 (TL072).

Disclaimer: Mind you, if it all goes up in smoke, don't blame me.

Thanks Ken, this is great!

I went ahead and powered those modules and another panel on +/- 15v and it all seems to be working. In case it's useful to anyone, here's a list of the modules I've tested:

VCFS
VCFQ
Dual Phaser
Frequency Shifter
Wave Multipliers
Wilson Analog Delay
Dual VCA
Dual Channel Stereo Output
Dual Audio Mixer

Modules that are untested but nothing blew up:
Control Module
Preamp Detector

Do you have a good reason not to add a +/-12v PSU to
your system or a pair of voltage regulators to provide 12v?
I know the STS PSUs aren't cheap, but a Power One or
Condor linear +/-12v can be bought and boxed up
fairly cheaply, or a pair of regulators could be added to your
15v rack for v ery little cost. Then your Serge modules will
work correctly....

Well I have a Serge PS6 that I've been using, but this stuff is going into a portable case with other +/- 15v gear so having one PSU for the entire system is desired.

I thought about using some regulators for the serge stuff, but Ken's response didn't indicate he'd run into any issues, so it didn't seem necessary. Additionally, I seem to remember reading somewhere that regulators are switching so it seemed like something that's better to avoid if it's not required.

I could imagine that some values might have slightly higher base values so the range of some controls might change a bit, but would anyone even notice (myself included)?

Do you know of issues that I'll run into that will keep the modules from working correctly?
