STS Address & Phone number

2001-03-21 by Patti

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has the new address for STS since their move from
California? I'm interested in obtaining a panel or two and want to make
sure I have the right number before I spend my moola :).

TIA,
Rodney

Hello
I am new to this group.
I don't own a Serge , but I searching for a modular and I am leaning towards
Serge.
I joined the group just to be informed on the instrument , and listen to
some sounds if possible....
Does anybody know a way to bring a Serge to Europe(Greece) safely and cheap?

anyone care to comment on STS's shipping packaging? i've never received any gear in the mail, and have
been lucky enough to pick up all my gear from the shop in person. i'm sure they have sent plenty
of units overseas and will pack your items quite securely.

Notes for "Planetary Unfolding"?

2001-03-23 by Les Mizzell

Evening,

Does anybody know of any "production notes" for "Planetary Unfolding"
anywhere? I'm simply curious as to how the recording process went.

Are single notes multitracked like hell to build up those pads?
Or....Michael's system is certainly big enough for some polyphony...are some
of the pads played polyphonically from a keyboard? Was there a score?

The more I listen to it and pick out details...there's some amazing textures
and sounds in there.

Wish we could convince him to join the list (heh)...

Just wondering....

What's your preferred target for Mir if it decides to hit something?

well, he was invited, and here's what i got back in reply from karen at earth turtle:

"Hi Matt!
I told Michael about the group. He has the address and will certainly
visit in the near future.
He wishes that he did own a Serge, but has not had the funds to reinvest
in a system. Someday...
He appreciated your positive feedback.
Enjoy!
Karen"

MS's new CD, Within, has a wholly serge track called seven that certainly
revisists his PU (heheh) terrain. its available from earth turtle, here:

music recordings of Michael Stearns 1988 to 1998:

michaels serge is seen here in a new SMOG pic:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/files/mschronos.jpg

and here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SergeModular/files/mstearns.jpg

and if you like PU i can't recommend enough listmember chris macdonald's "telomere"
CD which sure comes close:

Telomere Electronic Space Music CD

(yes, i've plugged this already, but its that good, and all serge!)

i seem to recall rex asking kevin braheny in the shop one day about stearns serge, and i think
braheny ended up with it. but don't quote me......

I've been doing some experimenting lately with thick moving chords ala PU
and my guess is that Sterns is using a hell of a lot of Osc's thru VCMs. Then
again, if he's useing Kevins system there are a hell of alot of OSCs.!!!
LOL I believe Kevin told me once he used 90 OSCs for the THX sound system
intro when it first came out. That intro is also one one of his records. Just
can't remember which one
My understanding is that it was Kevins system that sterns used for PU as well
as doing alot of the programming.... but don't quote me on that.

For purely historical interest... was production quicker in Stearn's Serge
times, or was acquiring this system a matter of years?

It was more a matter of how fast you could build your own. LOL

My panel & power supply was *extremely* well-packed, and could probably
have survived some very hard knocks.
the downside is that shortly thereafter, I got hit for 595 uk pounds in
sales tax & import duties! (IE approx $833, or nearly enough for a
frequency shifter) It was still worth it though. The moral for the
original poster is, use the time during which your panel is being built
to save up as much $$$ as possible...if you don't need it (I have on
occasion got away with it on other syhth modules from the states &
canada), well, there's a nice little pile of ca$h, right?
best etc.

michael stearns interview

2001-03-30 by norman fay

My friend scott aitken wrote a feature on michael stearns for audio
media magazine some time ago. Only a little bit of serge, I'm afraid,
but quite interesting nevertheless IMO. He just emailed me to say it's
turned up online, so here it is:

http://www.audiomedia.com/archive/features/us-0201/us-
0201-michael_sterns/us-0201-michael_sterns.htm

best etc.
