M-Class: Bipolar Outputs

M-Class: Bipolar Outputs

2008-02-21 by metafoetus2002

Hi Matt,

I don't see any bipolar outputs on the VC TIMEGEN CLOCK or VC TIMEGEN OSC. I would have
loved to be able to do a vibrato (sorry for this anachronistic wish) without experiencing a
pitch shift when increasing vibrato amount – e.g. by patching a bipolar output of one half of a
CLOCK into an OSC VC IN.

So is it possible to add a bipolar output as a factory modification? Or will we see other M-
Class modules offering specialized OSC with bipolar outputs for such purposes – beside the
TRIPLE OSCILLATOR?

Thanks,
Jan-Hinnerk

Yes, but not right away.

However, the VCFQ in low frequency mode, patched to self oscillate makes a nice bipolar sine.

Fortunately a few of the MIDI-CV converters on the market have a built-in vibrato LFO defaulted to modwheel. Also, the lower half of an ACP can be used for voltage offset of a triangle.

Just some thoughts...

Certain future M-class series will include bipolar outputs that provide the functionality you desire. Current shop panels that offer this include the Red and Blue CV panels, via modules such as the Dual Slope Generator and Quadrature Oscillator.
There is no intention by Rex to create exclusive groups of M-class users and shop panel / custom panel owners. The various products can (and should) be used together. So for a given client the appropriate solution may be some combination of M-boats (Creature and Gator, for example) and shop panels (i.e. Soup 2 and Blue CV).
Rex can accomodate certain minor custom requests (such as bipolar outputs in place of signal inputs) on shop panels, but to do this within the M-class would defeat the primary concept: to provide an affordable format for people to start or expand their Serge system, while advancing the state of STS into a 21st century business that allows Rex to support the paradigm and all of us over the coming decades.
Best wishes,
Chris Sawyer

Sorry, should have said "ACPR"...I noticed there was one on the Sequencer-A M-odule.

    Fair enough, John. :-)
I should have written "years" or at the very least "next decade or so."
My meaning was that that a major motivation for the M-class development is to promote further longevity for the Serge line.
As long as Rex's back holds up...

I know what you meant. I was just injecting a little faux humor, mock horror into your assertion.
