Strange trade offer...Help?

Strange trade offer...Help?

2007-02-11 by chorus72000

Hi Joe here. I need some help ( or advice )...First off I make minimalist glitchy stuff but also
70's inspired ( Boards of Canada ) type stuff...Now thats out of the way back to the advice...I
have a friend who wants to trade his Synthesizers.com Studio 44 for my Serge Animal panel?
Now the reason he wants to do this is he's moving into a smaller space...So question is "is it
worth it?" He has the typical setup but with the new Moog sequencer, swith and gate modules
(oh and the Moog lowpass filter) any help would be appreciated cause as much as I know
what I'm doing I can't seem to wrap my head around this one...and for the record all I have is
the Animal panel and I can't afford to build a bigger system for a while...Sorry for the long
winded post and again MANY thaks in advance for any advice...

Joe

What is the 44 module compliment?
I love serge stuff and think it has a better sound than s.com....in general.
But in the hands of the right synthesist it can sound amazing. The
problem with the .com is the lack of cool control voltage sources or complex
oscillator timbres. both of those would be helpfull with glitch.

All in all I'd probably grab the .com (if its a full 44 cabinet).

minimalist, glitchy, weathered/aged organic, warbly sounds... I think
of the Animal, first. I personally wouldn't trade an Animal for any
amount of Synthesizers.com. Tempted, yeah, but I wouldn't.

Hi Joe here. I hear what your all saying and thats the thing Serge is
amazing but then again I've heard amazing things done on a Casio = )... All
I'm thinking is with the Animal I'm always wishing for a few extra modules
but with a full 44 ( I would swap out some things for a couple of
bridechamber modules like their wave multilpier...etc )...I agree that Serge
VCO's are bar none amazing BUT...yada...I feel like I'm talking myself in
circles...

Same here the Serge is the best modular synth about even if you have
only one boat.
its not about the size its the power and sound quality

Do NOT do this. You of all people should know having sold your first Animal only to regret it.
Joe, we've talked many times and I'm 100% confident you will be much happier with the Animal.

Hi Joe,

Jan-Hinnerk here. I bought your first Animal. I only sold it because I Rex made me an
Animal with an XFAD and a RING instead of the UAP. Had to wait a long time for it, and
missed the Animal badly.

Either one, your old Animal, my XFAD-and-RING-instead-of-UAP-Animal, and your
current Animal, are simply amazing synthesizers with an unmatched space/functionality
ratio, covering an enormous sonic range from "classic" synthesizer sounds to avantgarde
bug music and glitches.

You know that already.

Keep it :-)

Best,
Jan-Hinnerk

This past summer I parted out my 44 space dot com system (with the sequencer modules,
incidentally) to fund the purchase of a three panel Serge system, and I haven't looked back.
It was absolutely the right decision for me- It inspires creativity and is so much fun to work
with. The two systems are like night and day. If you've used your Animal for anything even
remotely experimental or "glitchy" and were pleased with the results, you will most certainly
miss it if you go through with the trade. Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve, but as you
really wrap your head around the functions of each module you begin to see how much
power is at your disposal. I see others on the list with far more hours than me "behind the
wheel" of a Serge are chiming in urging you to keep the Animal, and I'd like to recommend
the same.

Taking things from the opposite direction, if someone had offered *me* an Animal in
exchange for my dot com, I probably would have jumped on it!

Best regards,

George

hi all

Just did a live recording with my Serge last night also used some Plan B
, Livewire stuff too..all bananfied

I am more interested in nature, birds etc than music per say nowdays, I
have released records with the verse chorus singing thing, the techno,
drum n bass stuff and now have much more fun just doing stuff for
myself, I have 16 CDS full of modular fun :-)

Anyway if you are interested here it is
http://www.twango.com/media/cray5656.audio/cray5656.10001

I have only been with the modular for 6 months...I did learn 2 things
whilst doing this recording
1 I need more arms
2 playing in the dark with only the modular lights makes it a little
harder to work out where knobs are :-)

Anyway if you are interested here it is
http://www.twango. com/media/ cray5656. audio/cray5656. 10001

I have only been with the modular for 6 months...I did learn 2 things
whilst doing this recording
1 I need more arms
2 playing in the dark with only the modular lights makes it a little
harder to work out where knobs are :-)

Hi Joe here. Thanks everyone for the advice! it is a resounding "NO"...I
guess its time to be patient and save up for the next step of the Serge
journey...Chris and Jan your right I'd be making the same mistake twice and
Lord darkstar hit the hammer home...Now another question which has been
bugging me about the Animal...the lack of an adsr or even a sustained mid
point sooo question is can the DTG be triggered and held ( like a gate ) or
will it always trigger and complete its cycle? Hope that makes sense ( I
hate typing and prefere to talk in person but oh well ) and again MANY MANY
MANY thanks for some good advice...oh and if anyone is selling any panels
with an adsr please contact me first = )...

Joe,
If you patch your gate to the "sig in" jack (instead of the usual "trig in" jack) you should get a nice attack-sustain-release envelope where the rise and fall pots control the attack and release times, respectively. Of course, for this to work properly, your gate signal must actually stay high, which should be the case with most CV keyboards and midi/CV convertors.

Afaik the DTG is the guts of a DSG with a smaller panel layout.
So the DTG can come in different flavours according to your
specifications.
- One flavour is with "cycle switches"
- One is with "bipolar outs"
- One is with "signal in"

I've got a custom panel that was born with "bipolar outs"
- later i decided that that i needed "signal in" instead
and Rex helped me with the info required for the modification.
It involved desoldering a few wires from the PCB
and resoldering them to new points on the PCB.

best, - Kim

You can build your own joystick panel very cheap and versatile (range and offset for each
axis) : http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/joystick.html

Fernando

PS I deeply loved the naturish sample. Good music.
