Serge panel: repair or sell?

Serge panel: repair or sell?

2002-06-14 by Jim Johnson

Oy, now I come to the fork in the road with my Serge.

My single Serge panel has a checkered past; it's a series 79 that was
repackaged in an STS panel. There is no color coding on the jacks; the VCA
initial gains are wired backwards; and recently, the filter died. (Which
brings me to the modules: NTO, WM, VQVCF, DUSG, PHASER, Dual VCA x 2, CM x
2).

Given these problems, the royal hassles involved in getting a Serge fixed,
and everything, I'm debating just putting it up for sale at a budget price,
or fixing it. If I sell it, I'll "replace it" with Oakley and MOTM modules
in custom banana-jack front panels. I do intend to expand, but probably not
with Serge; the price per panel makes incremental upgrades difficult.

Thoughts?

Here's a raw observation...
If you're not going to expand with Serge why go to the expense of custom
banana front panels?
I agree that the banana system is nice to use, but after Serge the only
other banana systems out there are Modcan or a $3,000 Fenix (Buchla and
Synton 3000 not viable).
With a wide variety of non banana choices available and the cost of custom
mods probably reducing your budget by the value of another module I would
give it a passing thought.

Not an unreasonable question. I already have a Fenix, and the sequencer I'm
having built (Mikado) is also a banana system.

Well you could ask Paul to send you MOTM modules without jacks at all and
wire in bananas. He did it for me. I don't think he would object.
