i wouldn't claim that dsp software is a replacement for real
hardware. but: certain types of synthesis are difficult or impossible to do
on a analog synthesizer and software like super collider or pd allow for
combining sound generation and structure generation in a very close way.

one thing i want to mention: i think it is a bad idea for software
developers trying to mimick analog synthesizers. instead there are other
things where software is much more suitable.
but true: even a cool notebook is no match for a stack of serge panels :).
