Modules

Modules

2002-04-19 by S V G

It's been a while since I've had one of these puppies in front of me so I can't adequately
address your first question. Though there were several mods that we used to do to both modules to
make them more versatile.

For your second question, Yes, you're on the right track. You have four separate rows that
can control four different parameters (pitch, filter frequency, clock speed, amplitude, waveshape,
etc.) for the 16 stages. Or, you can use all 4 rows of 16 strung together to get 64 stages
controlling one parameter.

Third question. The Sample and Hold on the random source or noise source basically grabs a
voltage out of the whirling mass of pink noise soup. What you get is a different voltage every
time the clock reaches in to grab something. The Sample and Hold function on the Smooth and
Stepped Generator does a similar thing, it reaches into whatever waveform you have at the input
and grabs a voltage at that moment in time that the clock tells it to. If you have pink noise at
the input, it will react just like the aforementioned random source. If you have a slow moving
LFO at the input and a fast clock, you will get a staircase waveform. If the LFO at the input is
moving faster than the clock, you'll get a slowly changing "random pattern" emerging from the
mass. The SSG is one of the most powerful modules that Serge ever came up with. Powerful because
it's so wild and unpredictable. A very humanizing element to introduce to an electronic
instrument.

<Well, I finally got the chance to see and use a Serge in real life
yesterday thanks to the generousity of Dhyan Moller. Pardon my
excitement, but I'm so blown away by the thing... I didn't get time
to barely scratch the surface of what it can do.

I had a couple questions on modules:

1. what is the biggest limitation of a DTG compared to a DSG? What's
the most recommended DTG mod?

2. can the TKB be programmed to mute a step in a sequence? Could one
solution be to use a row and set the pots at full for a "gate" and
all the way down for a "mute", routing the row output to the intended
gate source?

3. are the S/H capabilities of a random source and S/H section of a
SSG equivalent or do they have their own distinct character?

I'm sure more questions will follow.>
